My experience with GFWL:
I bought Street Fighter 4 on Steam. Then went through the motions of creating account, etc.
The game wouldn't start until I made several retrys, as it always hanged when connecting to GFWL. Then only about half the times I tried to play online, it actually worked. On top of this, after a few months I logged in, only to find that all my unlocks were gone, as apparently the saves go on some cloud, or something, and it disappeared. There was nothing I could do to recover my saves, as I found out from some forums where others had the same issue.
Fast forward a few years, when I find out that SSF4 AE is being released. Except that, surprise, surprise, my country is now not supported, so the game is not sold here. I'm expecting that Souls won't be sold here either, so this is why personally I am against GFWL.

No, people want it on steam because 99% of PC gamers already have steam and it's the least obtrusive form of DRM available.
