Gank refers to the action of suddenly or cheaply killing somebody, generally when their defenses are low or non-existent.

It was originally used in...shoot. Some old-timey multiplayer FPS. Quake or Unreal. When you were typing something into the chat or AFK or otherwise unable to control your character, a little keyboard icon appeared above your character's head, so everyone knew. Killing someone who was typing or AFK was referred to as "Ganking".
