40 KB /v/'s list of how not to be casual (continued) Anonymous 03/07/12(Wed)06:03 No.131843859
    Doc: docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av4vRGViAcGMdDQxNGtVS3VSRENJdlY5Z2k0RHV1Vmc#gid=0

/v/'s opinion on what games every /v/irgin should have played.

A game will only be placed on list if you give some sort of explanation as to why you think everyone should have played it to not be casual. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something.

We will remove and add new games regularly. Question marks are games that still have to be confirmed.

Games that are too casual will be removed.

Editors are not responsible for the content of the list, if /v/ is too casual the list will also be casual.

In terms of platforming, the Super Mario Galaxy series is vastly superior to Super Mario 64. Try playing Super Mario 64 after playing either of the Galaxy games, rehashing star missions (collect 8 coins and find 5 secrets etc).

I'm RTS EXPERT from the last thread. Thank you whoever justified Cho Ren Sha 68k last thread, I didn't realize it was so categorically vital.

I think that the most important C&C games are Tiberian Sun (best setting and best execution of the field system in history), Generals (among the greatest Arena RTS of all time), and Red Alert 3 (one of the more complex arena RTS of all time). Of these three I think Generals is the only one worthy of consideration because it was Dustin Browder's brainchild. Hard counter system, 70% micromanagement (whereas Brood War, the other side of the Arena RTS coin, is 70% macromanagement, and micromanagement represents the meaningful exchanges between players and the presence of the player on the frontlines) as well as the secondary economy (black markets, hackers, and SDZs, something that no other arena RTS has really expanded on to such an extent.

I'd like Red Alert 2 to be justified. I think its only real accomplishment was something that Starcraft had done better before it, making a blindingly fast RTS with a soft counter system. Its expansion is an important milestone as the first C&C game to have relatively unique armies, but it was sloppily thrown together compared to the core game.

It's a 100 hours long jrpg with some incredibly tough parts. The intro alone is 1-2 hours long. The characters are well developped and interesting. The game requires a lot of patience to finish.

The Half-Life series has always bored the fuck out of me. The only interesting thing was the high production values. But, as a game, that just makes it a highly polished turd. The story is a straight ripoff from Doom: Scientists open portal, aliens come out. You're a random dickhead who has to fight your way out of the station. It was neat to play with physics back when HL2 came out as a novelty, but every game has it now, and the puzzles it forced you to solve were just distractions and hard stops in the flow of the game. You're running and gunning one second then you stop hard and have to put floating barrels in a box to make a bridge. It was pretty awful. That fan boat sequence is still one of the worst moments in any game franchise. When the gameplay is the weakest part of your game, you've made a huge mistake.

Then there's the horrible, horrible end sequence where they remove control from you for half the time, and the other half force you to play with the dullest weapon in the game. Beating the game with that felt like a completely hollow victory.

So what exactly is so good about HL2 again?

    The puzzles are shit.
The gravity gun is gimmicky and only has real use during puzzles or that zombie level.
You fight a grand total of five or so different enemies the entire game.
Most of the guns suck or are for novelty value, like the crossbow.
Explosive barrels everywhere even in later levels.
    Terrible, terrible forced vehicle sections.
A few of the chapters are nothing but dialog or running.
    Two unique human voices.

Because of the game’s heavily narrative- and cutscene-driven structure, it has terrible replay value. To me, this is the ultimate con against it. No game with shitty replay value deserves Game of the Year.

Don't fucking Seinfeld Effect me either. Even in 2004 this shit was inexcusable. Halo didn't do anything that badly. Call it generic casual shit but it still had more flavor, better atmosphere, a better story, and better multiplayer than this dud. Most of all, its singleplayer was actually fun to play more than once, thanks to co-op.

Fact of the matter is that on the time of release HL2 was revoloutionary and was hailed as one of the best games of all time and still is.

Type in on google "best game lists" or what not and I guarantee that every single list will have HL2 in the top 15 games. Why? I'll give you a hint; because its fantastic, particularly for its time.

Argumentum ad populum (literally, an argument to the people) is the logical fallacy that just because something is popular, it is therefore true. Undoubtedly many popular notions are true, but their truth is not a function of their popularity.

This logical fallacy is often used by children as an excuse for wanting something (everybody's got one), or doing something (everybody's doing it). Despite the juvenile nature of the argument, it is often used by people who should know better, particularly by those who are trying to force other people to their way of thinking.

You should add Legend of Dragoon.

It was basically the only JRPG to do battles correctly.

Also the lack of enemies that gave you a decent amount of EXP and gold, meant you really had to plan out some of the boss battles.

Halo helped popularize online console multiplayer and has shaped the market as it is today. Half-Life is pretty much irrelevant in 2012, nothing take's from the Half-Life games or is inspired by them. If they are, it's not in the mainstream.

OP, daytime /v/ has begun. Hold off until everyone's asleep again.

I mentioned Sacrifice last thread because it's an excellent unconventional RTS. Disregarding its imaginative setting and its all-star cast of VAs, as well as how good its graphics were relative to its time, Sacrifice was the first RTS since Herzog Zwei to make the player into the most important unit on the field. The balance held up well and the community remains active to this day.

I noticed that C&C Generals has not yet been added.
