RTS EXPERT from the last thread. Thank you whoever justified Cho Ren
Sha 68k last thread, I didn't realize it was so categorically vital.
I
think that the most important C&C games are Tiberian Sun (best
setting and best execution of the field system in history), Generals
(among the greatest Arena RTS of all time), and Red Alert 3 (one of the
more complex arena RTS of all time). Of these three I think Generals is
the only one worthy of consideration because it was Dustin Browder's
brainchild. Hard counter system, 70% micromanagement (whereas Brood War,
the other side of the Arena RTS coin, is 70% macromanagement, and
micromanagement represents the meaningful exchanges between players and
the presence of the player on the frontlines) as well as the secondary
economy (black markets, hackers, and SDZs, something that no other arena
RTS has really expanded on to such an extent.
I'd like Red Alert
2 to be justified. I think its only real accomplishment was something
that Starcraft had done better before it, making a blindingly fast RTS
with a soft counter system. Its expansion is an important milestone as
the first C&C game to have relatively unique armies, but it was
sloppily thrown together compared to the core game. |
