Actually that scene is taken heavily out of context. It may seem strange now but that part feels completely natural when you have gotten used to the off the place animations and "weird" music choices and the character personalities have been established. That scene specifically is in the third fourth of the game so it's understandable that a person like you who has a bad taste and haven't played the game sees it as shit.

No. Doom didn't hit mainstream. Neither did Quake or Half-life. FPS didn't hit mainstream, and mainstream didn't exist, until Halo 2. Halo one peaked everyone's interests but lacked multiplayer. Players had to connect their xbox to a router and use a gamespy tunneler to connect. The majority of casual players weren't smart enough to go through all that.
