Final Fantasy VIII - The story here is so hard to follow that caring about it goes out the window. Nice gameplay though; except the card game grind, that was bullshit.

Final Fantasy IX - The only one that comes close to dethroning FFIV for best story. This game was a great throwback to the origins of the series and well worth the play. However, the AP system was fucking horrible. Learning abilities not just by grinding, but by grinding with specific gear is fucking horrible.

Final Fantasy X - Overrated. The sphere grid made all the gameplay pointless because abuse was too easy. The story is really boring when you stop to analyze it.

Final Fantasy XI - I don't speak Chinese.

Final Fantasy XII - Balthier was cool. This game was a constant reminder the Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance exists, and that game is garbage.

Final Fantasy XIII - Good movie. The interactive bits where you press a button were kind of neat.

Final Fantasy X-2 - ...

Final Fantasy Tactics - Really engaging story and really engaging customization and game play. It's very slow though.

Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance (2) - These games are worse than Final Fantasy X-2.

Cloud, Tifa, Barret and Vincent were all in their twenties...well, Vincent was older but he's a vampire/monster thing so he looks twenties.

Cloud was not emo at all. He was fucked in the head because he has so much trauma, but he fights through it like a boss until Sephiroth confronts him about it. Then he gets better, gains confidence after re-discovering himself, screws his childhood crush and leads his team to destroy a demi-god.

Tifa was 100% supportive awesome throughout the game. And what a rack.

Barret was a cliche with a great backstory. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Vincent is another cliche who's entire character profile is to exist for penance. It might not be "dark, edgy, gloomy" but he's SUPPOSED to always be in a funk. But he's totally optional and easily missable so he shouldn't be a defining factor to FFVII in the first place. That's like not liking FFVII because you hated breeding chocobos...you totally didn't have to do that.

FF VII is bottom tier. Fun game in the 90s, but virtually aesthetically broken and unplayable in 2012. Here's hoping for a remake some day.

It can't be bottom tier, bro. It was a culturally defining video game. Dislike it for whatever reasons you want (bad artistry? really? Did you see those pre-renders?), but the gameplay is so solid, it's STILL being emulated throughout JRPG-dom.

I'll agree that the graphical representations are a bit hard to swallow these days, but that's a failing on your imagination's part, not the game's. It's like disliking Picasso because you don't see what he sees.

(I'm not saying I think Picasso is a great artist, I think he's an idiot, but what I am saying is that you need to change YOUR mindset to fit that game and not expect it to meet your graphical ideals after 2 decades)

FF4's story is like a troubled Game Master where half the players constantly never show up on a regular basis, and has to make up shit on the fly.

It was ok, good with nostalgia goggles on, but holy fuck is it NOT the best story.

It’s just a broken game in the modern world. The aesthetics are that bad that I get headaches playing this game, with ugly, clashing colours and polygons that barely represent people. While I don’t care if a game looks simple, I do care if it breaks rules of aesthetics, and it’s for that reason that I would love to see VII get a remake so I can give it a proper chance again.
