    They didn't take down copyright-infringing files after being notified by the copyright owners. They were getting money for premium accounts and paying people who uploaded popular files, knowing that those files infringed copyrights.

    SOPA had nothing to do with it, it all had to do with laws already on the books, and since some of their servers were in Virginia it gave the FBI jurisdiction to seize the servers and extradite the CEO.
