I've been playing the more recent SMT games, Nocturne, Persona 3-4, Devil Summoner, Strange Journey and I'm currently playing through Digital Devil Saga (just beat the boss at the end of the Capital (the names are still really strange and hard for me to remember)).

I still find it hard to believe how you guys go on about games like Nocturne or DDS are better than the new Persona games, because I honestly think that isn't true.

While I think Nocturne was a lot more fun than DDS (at least so far, with far more flexible and involving game mechanics) I don't think it comes close to Persona 4's level.

I might give you Persona 3, but Persona 4 has a level of polish that's just mind blowing, managing to keep itself rewarding and interesting for practically every aspect. It's far more unique and executes the most quirky gameplay mechanics very elegantly.

The battle system is also a lot more fun. It actually feels like a mix of DDS and Nocturne with set party members along with recruitable demons for yourself (personally, I prefer the way you get demons/persona in these games are much more convenient and faster) I also like how I can feel the damage I'm dealing, the powerful blows feels like actual blows instead of feeling like some plastic bag hitting a wall like in Nocturne.

You're not just saying all this becuase Persona is popular, right?

    SMT general?

Nocturne has a better atmosphere and marginally better gameplay than the others. P4 has the best presentational style. DDS is SMT trying to be a normal RPG in the wrong era; they're good as far as RPGs go but the second one is a piece of shit storywise and easy as shit. In fact that's probably what makes Nocturne better: if you want it to be difficult, it is, whereas theothers are all extremely easy regardless of difficulty.
    >> Anonymous 12/06/11(Tue)16:17 No.119465160
You're that same guy who was saying Persona 4 was the best JRPG ever because it was so polished right? I think I recall telling you why that's wrong.

DDS is more polished, deal with it. Nocturne is close to the same level of polish, but it suffered for being Atlus' first major PS2 game.

Personally as shallow as it probably sounds I prefer the Persona games merely because of the characters and story they present. Even though people might find Nocturne and such better in game play, the Persona series just offers me a more engaging atmosphere that's far more pleasant to me.

Yes, it's precisely because Persona is popular.

I don't give a shit about the highschool or waifu sim, I just like having actual characters with actual interaction and development. Mainline SMT is fine and all, but I'm allowed to have my preferences.

And on that note, Devil Survivor is the best in the series.

I guess you could argue that was the whole point, though.

But the way battles worked and how the press-turn/one more system worked was better in Persona, Persona 3's broken system aside.
Also, as entertaining as recruiting demons by talking to them is, it just drags on forever.

What was it that was so fun about those games again?

I thought they were slow and the presentation was weak (the sprites and squares are so small, seriously...good music though)

I got to the Yeti, beat it, and then I got bored. When was it going to get really interesting?

I'm asking this as a serious question, because I was thinking of getting it for the 3DS in the future if it ever releases in Europeland and the 3DS gets a redesign.

    This.

Like, Persona 4 was challenging but besides the boss fights the combat was pretty damned basic.

Nocturne feels sort of like a turn based Souls game for me; if I make the wrong decisions I expect to get raped. It's one of the few turn based JRPG's that feels like there's actual thinking involved in combat besides spamming weaknesses.

    >DDS discussion

    OH BOY
    TIME TO SPEW

    DDS Plot Analysis:

The story is ultimately regulated by Nocturne. The realm was merely an alternate reality through the Amala Network. The state the sun was in was a variation (with Brahman), which is essentially Kagutsuchi but different in form. The sun turning into what it was (Cuvier Syndrome) was a variation of what Kagutsuchi did for the invert world in Nocturne.

Instead of several humans competing for power and recreating the world in their own respective image (Reason), they were all unaware of the situation, and instead fought each other for mere survival. The Embryon stuck together and ultimately brought about Seraph (Sera + Serph, after being empowered by Shroedinger)

Shroedinger is the god who (directly or indirectly) was summoned to the earth and watched over Sera/Serph. This is the same as the gods summoned by the humans in Nocturne (Hikawa/Chiaki/Isamu) through a high concentration of power (The emotional wrath brought about by Sera witnessing Serph's true nature).

Seraph DOES NOT compare to the Hito-Shura at all in terms of power. The fanboys/community wanted to perceive Seraph as a Demi-God or another being of a penultimate tier of power, rivaling/surpassing the Hito-Shura.

Seraph was only a human. The human empowered by a god (Shroedinger) to achieve a reason to bring about the verdict regarding the earth (recreate in whomever's image).

To compare, the Hito-Shura killed several god-empowered humans like Seraph, on top of killing Kagutsuchi and (TDE) besting Lucifer in a duel and leading his army onto Heaven to kill YHVH.

Much evidence was brought out like this through subtle notations, such as the Amala Terminals covering Brahman's body and the situation of the earth as it was being so similar in cause/effect, compared to Nocturne.
