Minecraft 1.0 getting slammed by german magazine Gamestar and fanboys raging in the comments. It's beautiful. :3

    http://www.gamestar.de/spiele/minecraft/test/minecraft_10,46603,2562200.html

They didn't give it a score because "not enough game in the game".

American outlets really review on hype. That is why I always wanted them to go back and re-review games that they gave high scores to and see if they really do hold up to the score, a year or more down the line.

Let's sum up a couple of things shall we?
You still can't get apples nor cocoa beans.
You still can't get like 80% of the music records.
Everything about the game except for the most basic of things needs to be learned the brute force way (or internet).
The new goal of the game (kill the dragon) feels extremely tacked on and doesn't really add anything to the game.
    The dragon has no sounds.
Wolves are only spawned when chunks generate, they despawn if you don't tame them after a while.
Multiplayer still has a fair bit of latency related issues.
Swamp transitions are the uggliest pieces of shit to grace your minecraft world.
You now need to grind to enchant your weapon.

I could go on and on and on.

scores are not meant to be timeless

they're meant to tell people if they should spend their money on a game when it comes out

do you really think websites care about a review a year later? That page probably got as much visits in the last 6 months as it did in the first month, why bother. Old game is old.

We don't. People bought the game because it was like £3? $5? Back in alpha (which was when most of the sales were I think. The game was never worth $30, and still isn't, but it was decent enough for £3 and at least had the potential back then to be good. It's made me take the legal speak of pre-order games more seriously now though (you are paying for the alpha with no guarantee of updates etc).

Before he found out he was too stupid/lazy to actually do it, Notch said he was going to make something like Dwarf Fortress in 3D.

I think that's why he actually started selling it in alpha stage. He knew he couldn't finish the game, so he wanted to see hor far he can go with the junk he had.
Luckily for him, he now has enough money to hire other people to do his work who also won't finish the game because all the morons have already bought it so why bother

    Notch's tweets are about this:

    >It was no fault of Mojang’s. They were told when they reserved the “XS” (bad pun shutter) night club at The Wynn Casino, that it was for the event attendees (21+) alone.
    >Well that didn’t happen at all, Dead Mau5 attracted every type of club douche and douchette you could imagine. They probably outnumbered the MineCon crowd 5 to 1. The casino/club staff and security, apparently not knowing or caring about the exclusivity of the event, just lumped us (when I say us, I mean both attendees and exhibitors) in with the overwhelming number of Jersey Shore clones (and treated us as such, I was manhandled by a few bouncers for, well I’m not really sure. Standing?)
    >To make things worse the place was several thousands over capacity. I waded through the dance floor to get to the other side and it was like a metal concert, I received a few blows to the head from stray elbows and such. One of my exhibitor friends was “kinda” puked on by a very drunk club regular. You couldn’t move, you couldn’t talk, you couldn’t get a drink in under 45 minutes from the bars unless you wanted to pay for $1,000 table service.
    >It was an “eff this” situation in minutes, and apparently the awfulness even touched up the MineCon big wigs a bit. One of Mojang’s staff was tweeting that they roped off about half of their group when trying to get in, and they were not allowed to enter the club. During the discussion with the bouncers dozens of scantly clad women were ushered in while they, some of the very people who had reserved the club and booked Dead Mau5, were told the room was overcapacity and that they wouldn’t be allowed in until numbers dropped.
    >In short, total failure by the Wynn Casino, and as Notch just recently tweeted: “We also learned who not to work with at Minecon. Shame.. :/” I can’t think he means anyone else other than them.

I actually don't understand this at all... I'm not really a fanboy; but saying there's not enough "game" (whatever the fuck that means) in minecraft to review is... well, to be honest, I can't figure out an analogy stupid enough to match what they said. That actually gave me brain cancer.

I'm sure it's just because German reviewers have played too much Forklift Simulator 2011. They no longer know what a video game is.

There are plenty of events (in vegas) that have smaller, niche crowds that don't have this shit happen. Honestly, it's a little bit of a fuck up on both sides. Notch should have known Deadmau5 would draw those kinds of people, if he wasn't a fucking autist, and could have asked WAY BEFORE the event if the dance could be exclusive to the convention crowd. On the other hand, the casino staff isn't going to be getting his (and everyone who stayed there) money next year, which is pretty shitty business etiquette. There's not a lot to many games out there, to be honest. Minecraft doesn't actually have an objective. You just dick around or whatever. It's honestly enough "game" to get reviewed (again, whatever the fuck that means), if games like FORKLIFT SIMULATOR2010 and TRAINS ERRYWHERE 2012 have enough "game" to get reviewed, then surely minecraft does as well?

To be honest, the statement is actually so stupid, that it can only be a deep-rooted jealously in the fact that germany can only make games like the Simulator series nowadays. I mean, minecraft has gone to shit, it's got a fuckton of bugs, never really gets updated, and the price is going up, but it is, to many, many people, more engaging than three quarters of the tripe that gets released today. Certainly more engaging than any simulator.

Those games have reasons to do something, ie because it's a simulator. There's very little in the way of reasons in minecraft.

Compare with dwarf fortress (unfair, I know), there's reasons to make all the workshops and expand your fortress and craft and trade and form a militia etc. If you don't do it, bad things happen.

The only bad things in minecraft are random AI that aggro if you get too close. No organised threat, and quite simple to defeat. There's no reason to build anything bigger than an 8x8x8 soil cube with a door and some chests/smelters/benches. That's 90% of the content right there. Sure, a harry potter castle looks good, but it's not functional. You may even have fun building it, but that's playing with a toy, not playing a game.

I do like the terrain generator a lot, it's just a shame there's nothing to do inside it.

    First of all:
These games have more objectives than Minecraft do. You have an actual goal, even campaigns with various objectives.

Second: German games also include games like the Anno series, the Settler series, Crysis and many really great Adventure games (like Geheimakte: Tunguska, I don't know the English title, though) far better than most of their counterparts.

    REALLY?

The backlash of that should be awesome. The yogscast guys are a little weird but everyone is who plays minecraft, and they seem like genuinely nice guys and are funny. And they have a HUGE following because of Minecraft, but people have gotten way more entertainment from them, than from minecraft. Hell I don't even play this game and I watch some of their stuff.

His game hasn't sold as much as it used to, it has already passed its peak rate of sales. It is selling now at a decreasing rate and if it were to get more popular, it would have increased greatly in sales over minecon. his final release is the last chance to greatly increase sales.

However, that hasn't taken into account merchandise like the foam axe, post its and magnets (€20, €10, €20 respectively). But you have to account for production, transportation, and storage costs and I believe they are a recent addition.

    >You still can't get apples nor cocoa beans.
Yes you can. They're rare loot in chests. Which isn't a problem itself, the real problem is that they're not good loot. They make shitty food besides the golden apple.
    >You still can't get like 80% of the music records.
    Pretty sure you can.
    >Everything about the game except for the most basic of things needs to be learned the brute force way (or internet).
Nothing wrong with that. An in game tutorial would be ridiculously long and complicated.
    >The new goal of the game (kill the dragon) feels extremely tacked on and doesn't really add anything to the game.
Sure it does. It adds a dragon. The real problem is that it's a one time challenge and then you're done with it forever.
    >The dragon has no sounds.
    Now that's a real problem.
    >Wolves are only spawned when chunks generate, they despawn if you don't tame them after a while.
Don't think that's true anymore now that animals are persistent. Wolves are still far too rare and their AI is suicidally retarded.
    >Multiplayer still has a fair bit of latency related issues.
Never had any problems on my server even using very limited RAM.
    >Swamp transitions are the uggliest pieces of shit to grace your minecraft world.
    Yes they should blend more.
    >You now need to grind to enchant your weapon.
This I truly hate. Even with an XP grinder (pic related) it still is a pain in the ass.

    Notch is a moron.

Also, I'm sure yogscast wouldn't try to hide saying a word at all whatsoever. They are grown men and can do what they want. Notch is a fucking child imo.

Bullshit. Not explaining mechanics is shitty development 101. How about progression? How about having crafting recipes that promote exploration or actual interaction with monsters? How about meaningful goals and pacing?

OKAY HERE IS WHAT NOTCH WOULD HAVE EARNT ON AVERAGE IN TOTAL using guestimates

    >starting selling minecraft cheap <€5, it is now about €20
    >4,128,214 people bought the game
    That's anywhere from €41,282,140 to €82,56,42,80

    >Sweden has an average tax rate of 57.77%
    >http://www.taxrates.cc/html/sweden-tax-rates.html
So that is anywhere from €23,848,692 to €47,697,385 total profit after tax
Then there are expenses for businesses, holidays, etc

We could assume the generous upper threshold if we want to take into account any profit he may have made from minecon and souvenirs, although we don't have results from that but I doubt they would exceed the upper guess limit
and 9,033 people bought the game.

    >it is €19.95 euro a game
    >That is €180,208.35 on that day
    >at 57.77% tax
that is €104,106.36 a day he earns after tax, not including expenses. far from the 200k

well, the biggest european gaming magazin is "Computer Bild Spiele". No shit, it's released in Germany, Spain, and I think Italy (of course it has a different name in Spain and Italy).

Also: Gamestar is for faggots. I remember the Gothic 4: Arcania Review where they said, that Risen was a piece of shit and Gothic 4 will be way better than Risen. What the hell ...

Minecraft sold 800,000 copies at 15 Euros. It sold the rest at 20 Euros. (According to Wikipedia article). You can make much better calculations based on that. But you're using the individual tax rate which doesn't apply because Mojang's profits taxed as corporate profits, different tax rate.

What happened was people demanding more challenges. So Notch added a hunger bar forcing you to eat 40 loafs of bread each day, and a worthless dragon, etc. People who wanted a combat/survival challenge missed the point of Minecraft and ruined the game.
