    GTAIII Theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmUuKI2tWXc

Despite what some people may think, GTA as a series has always been a pioneer for class in video games. Some of the subject matter may be immature and ridiculous, but most of it has really pushed the boundaries of what video games are capable of. Will be bumping with official GTA art.

I think the most underrated moment of the series was in GTA3. Being betrayed by the mob and having to relocate across the river, killing your old bosses and never being able to set foot in the neighborhood which you grew most accustomed to at first. Sure, San Andreas topped it in a way, but the missions in SA following that took a while to get awesome again, while GTA3's story just kept going full pace.

How is a war criminal any worse than any of the other characters in the series?

Class can mean different things, I meant it like it helped push video games into a more adult and story-oriented market. GTA has always been a critique of society, you have to portray society truthfully to do that. Some people are bad

Check that shit out, GTA has always had a pretty unique art direction. They've been doing kind of offbeat music since the beginning, shit that would be considered main stream now GTA helped get there.

It's also interesting how the covers and drawing style has evolved along with the series. The old ones had an almost 60s grindhouse feel. Then starting with 2 it resembled stuff from the 70s and the music complimented that, even though VC and SA were clearly influenced heavily by the 80s and 90s, it always resembled what the 80s or 90s would have looked like through the 70s eyes.

Starting with 4 it took a slightly different shift, clearly more influenced by HBO's overarching serialized story lines and unflinching grittiness of a life of crime in any given city.

I think what Rockstar was trying to accomplish went over the heads of many gamers (inb4 2deep4u) but plenty of us did 'get it'. A serialized story campaign set in a single city or town can be interesting enough without jetpacks and ridiculous shit, but with more down-to-earth conflicts between better-developed characters with plausible and relate-able motivations.

Again, a total shift in music direction, more electronic and 'weirder' overall feel, but a kind of sound that if arranged differently would feel out of the 70s like GTA3. The violins give it a more modern touch and class it up a bit.

I'm glad you feel that way anon, VC doesn't get nearly enough credit. A lot of people remember 3 as being 'the first' although it was hardly that, the first 3D GTA of course, and SA still triumphs most video games on account of the sheer scope and ambitiousness of it; but VC did what it did perfectly. The gameplay from SA really doesn't make as far of a leap from VC as VC did from 3, also I prefer the 80s style over 90s, being a kid who grew up watching Miami Vice and episodes of Cops from that era.

Now looking back on the series, GTA3 seems incredibly more realistic than VC and SA. Part of this is because it's set 'in the present', another part was due to the graphical limitations at the time of its development. Remember the big bad at the end of GTA3? A helicopter. It was rare in the game to be able to survive a police helicopter encounter (if you didn't use cheat codes), so when you fight the chopper at the end it makes sense because it's really the only thing they can do that's tougher than just fighting a bunch of people or one person with a better weapon.

Fighting one helicopter as the final boss would be laughable by any other GTA's standards, remember this is also because you could aim any actual gun asides from that crazy m16 and a sniper rifle. and even then you couldn't shoot people out of helicopters with bullets.

As the series progressed and the player was capable of more and more things, one helicopter would never be enough, it would have to be 2 or 3 helicopters. With vice city game better guns, more advanced AI (enemies taking cover), and the ability to have more shit on the screen. Of course this allowed for the story to be staged on a larger scale as well. Instead of an anonymous street thug exploring this way through Rockstar's fictionalized American criminal underworld, you're a member of the mafia, you have a name, and you're already quite important in the grand scheme of things by comparison. This was great in the sense that it only allowed the story to go up from there, to get bigger and better, but it also trapped GTA. Now there'd better be 2 or 3 helicopters to fight, there'd better be 15 or 20 guys to fight instead of 6 because 6 isn't impressive anymore.

Now when San Andreas was released, the graphics were far outdated, other game devs had done more and more things with the playstation 2 by now, so Rockstar went a different direction. They went as far as they possibly could with their pre-established engine. They did things like free-aiming and jets and jet packs and parachutes because they could now, and it was pretty fucking awesome. For most people, this is what they remember best about GTA, jumping from a helicopter onto a firetruck or area 51 or all the awesome customization stuff you could do. It was VERY far in-depth for anything outside of an rpg at the time and it might as well have almost been one.

Now when GTA4 was released, a lot of gamers felt betrayed. I know I did, but only for a very short moment until I really released what they did. This was always what they had wanted to do. This was the game they wanted 3 to be. They've always striven for realism and it was other factors that drove them away from it. It's okay to have all the wacky shit from SA every now and then, but this is what GTA has always been about; petty crime in an urban environment.

GTA4 is more about a statement of what drives people to crime, how people interact with other people and why. It drops the leveling system and fancy gadgets for bullets and realistic car handling. It's more a simulation and an experiment of the human condition than an over-the-top wacky shoot-em-up-video game anymore.

While GTA protagonists have always adhered to some sort of cliche none stray the most than Niko Bellic, in his actions and his character.

The mute criminal henchmen, a staple of the crime genre. You will see this character in every medium from movies, to television, novels and comics, especially video games.

The loudmouth Italian middle-management gangster, also a very well known stereotype not unfamiliar to the crime genre, but barely done in video games until Vice City.

The black Gangsta whose mostly trying to do the right thing, set in the midst of 90s California's unstable racial climate, while also a staple of the crime genre, it's even less common than the previous protagonist.

What GTA does is let you explore these stereotypes, to see how they would fare in their own stories. After all, these kind of people DID and still DO exist. The GTA stories and settings do their best to explain their actions, while never sympathizing or defending them.

It really took a while for it to sink in for me, but with what Rockstar tried with GTA4 is fucking ingenious. They created their own stereotype, something not really seen in any medium outside of the news or documentaries: The Eastern European thug.

Think about it, how common are these guys? And yet, they're everywhere in the world. With the fall of the Soviet Union there were tons of armed conflicts between people fighting for power, tons of ex-soldiers, tons of now-mercenaries and ex-mercenaries, tons of misplaced weapons and loyalties. It's the perfect catalyst for a GTA game that can go back to GTA3's realism without not explaining why the protagonist kicks so much ass. Rockstar was sitting on this goldmine of plausibility all along and probably waited until they were confident enough in their developers to make a game where cars handled realistically, where shooting out tires and drivers alike was something the player could do with ease.

You never really see the Eastern-European thug in things because it's harder for an American audience to relate to it, it's not glamorous, there's not 10 movies you can take iconic scenes from; but the irony is it should be the most relate-able out of all of them. I remember them saying that their choice of going back to Liberty City was because this was more of an immigrant's story and it totally sums up Niko and his reasons for doing what he's doing. The only reason the Italian mob was so popular in fiction was because at one point in American history all the sudden there were TONS of Italians in every city, and not only that, they were all poor as shit. There was widespread racism, they couldn't get jobs, and in turn they tried to maintain their own culture in strictly Italian neighborhoods. Many of them turned to crime and ended up having a pretty large influence on the city, and thus the American gangster was really born.

The same kind of sociological conditions created the 90s black gangstas, and the same for Niko and his kind as well.

Now it's obvious Rockstar was well aware of the backlash from GTA4's realism approach, even though they did make an honest effort to keep the amount of action exciting and fresh. They by mid-game you were going to have to fight 15 or so guys, all with sub-machine guns or shotguns and at least an assault rifle thrown in now and again to keep it challenging. But I'm sure they were surprised initially by the amount of fans who were still critical about that. That's why the Ballad of Gay Tony is THAT fucking nuts. They really do want to appease everyone.

For GTA5, I could see this going one and only one direction....

I appreciate the points the OP is making concerning the story, setting and themes of the games. But ultimately my opinion would be that for games, the primary determinant of class and quality must always be gameplay. While setting is important, gameplay is paramount.

As such, I would respectfully disagree with the assertions made elsewhere in the thread that the series is better off avoiding its more outlandish or even ridiculous elements. Indeed, I would hold that given the richness of the gameplay experiences they provide, these are in fact some of the series' strongest elements.

The freedom of exploration and interaction afforded to the player by the gameplay elements are at least as important as the scripted story, characters and plot in immersing the player into the setting of the game.

My prediction is that GTA5 will start small, realllll small, and I'm talking gameplaywise. Because eventually it's going to have to pick up to the point where where's assault rifles and shit everywhere, heavily armed groups of enemies, helicopters, all that kinds of shit.

I think the first section of the game will be mostly gangbanger kind of shit, but everything is going to be more deadly. Think GTA4's cover system without using auto aim, but if guns did 1.5-2 times more damage. Enemies with pistols are not going to be something scoffed at, it'll feel more like "that's a fucking guy with a gun, and he's trying to kill you."

Mid game kind of shit will of course bring in the more SMGs and shotty-oriented gameplay, as well as a heavier emphasis on being good in a car. This is when I could see the protagonist acting as a kind of henchmen for a larger group, maybe you'll have more of a dedicated 'team' this time around, more akin to Lost and the Damned than to your Irish pals in GTA4.

By the end though, you know it'll end up with you by yourself most of the time, straight up operator status and all that shit with ak's and everything, every GTA does and has to. By this point you were THE go-to henchmen, THE assassin. You'll be fighting threats larger than life itself, and that's why I *think* the game will be centered around the Mexican Drug Cartels.

For those bros not familiar with the current state of American, North American, and Worldwide-International Crime, the Mexican Drug Cartels are fucking winning.

Shit got real serious in South America, where everything used to be run, but now the major operations have really moved up to Mexico. In the last few years alone over 40,000 people have died as a result of the Cartel Wars, and every passing day the violence is spreading up into America. There's a Cartel called Los Zetas, you also may have heard there's some current on-going feud with Zetas and 'Anonymous', apparently they kidnapped a guy, but since that is not related to Grand Theft Auto we will not discuss that in this thread.

They are THE ultimate major player in the criminal underworld at the moment. They completely triumph over any kind of Russian or Baltic or ex-soviet Bloc ethnic gangs. It is the most logical direction for Rockstar to take, if they're brave enough to try it, which they've proven they are before countless times.

I'm going to go eat dinner but I'll be back later, keep the discussion going guys.

    OP here, dinner was delicious.

It would be no surprise that Rockstar has always been paying attention to current trends in crime, which would all but confirm Mexican Drug Cartels. Another reason I think it's about them is because of the slightly increased exposure Cartels have been getting in movies and television. Cartels have been in shit for a while, they go back to the days of Scarface and Miami Vice, but the current view of the Modern Mexican Cartels in my opinion starts with the movie Traffic.

Traffic is a film that came into popularity due to its look, a low-budget handheld production, also it's one of the first notable movies where everything is tinted yellow or green or blue, which is so normal these days we don't even really notice it. It had a distinct style of its own and introduced a new threatening crime syndicate; the Mexican criminal underworld.

Following Traffic, there has been a renewed interest in portraying Latino criminal groups. One can't help but notice the increasing trend of using hispanic criminals and their various organizations, such as MS13, as go-to villains. Training Day for instance, is largely about drug dealers on the street that are largely black, but they still manage to throw in a few hispanic people. After the success of Training Day, of course other mediums began to use heavily tattooed hispanic gangbangers whenever they needed a 'third party' gang, a gang caught in the middle of something other conflict. Both Crank movies do this as well (Crank being pretty much GTA:The Movie)

In 2006 a documentary which I can almost assure you is on Rockstar's map was released, Cocaine Cowboys. It chronicles the late-70s-early-80s Columbian Cocaine Cartels, primarily the Medallin, and deals pretty specific information into how their organization was run, and what kind of people were behind the whole thing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sJiBoqH1Yg

If you haven't seen Cocaine Cowboys, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's definitely the most interesting documentary I've ever seen in my life and it's totally related to my beloved crime genre since most of the shit we see in movies and television is based on the events of it in one way or another.

I'll bet you anything Rockstar ate that shit up, and would have loved to include a more structured organization in GTA4 like the one described in Cocaine Cowboys, but as it came out in 2006 GTA4 was already well into development; they settled for basing a character after the primary 'antagonist' and catalyst in the film (http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=443304)

Amazing ideas that i would pay good money for... but both of those would make me want a GTA style Mega City 1 where you can be a Judge working from Cadet to Senior or a Perp working his way up through the Mega City Mob familys... course the'd have to limit it to a 1 Mega City Sector not the whole city... Maybe even missions that take you into the Cursed Earth (Judges=Hotdog run, Perps=smuggleing).

Although Cocaine Cowboys was set in the 80s, what they accomplished back then is obviously what makes today's Cartels so dangerous, and it renewed everyone's interest in the smart and sophisticated hispanic gangster image, distancing itself from today's time where the stereotypical gangbanger has a face covered in tattoos.

Shows like The Shield, Breaking Bad, and this year's Sons of Anarchy season 4 all feature Cartels as this supremely powerful and mythical force of the underground. It would be fitting for Rockstar to be influenced by these shows, as they are the exactly kind of premium serialized television that influenced GTA4's art direction.

Now, what are the implications in regard to the protagonist and the setting of GTA5 possibly dealing with Mexican Drug Cartels? I'd say there's a pretty strong chance of a Hispanic protagonist, and a pretty good chance of of somewhere along the lower half of the country as the setting. If it is a hispanic protagonist, or some sort of Cartel soldier, you can almost certainly guarantee he will be part of a parody of the Los Zetas, since they were founded by ex-military it would be a plausible explanation for the player's skills.

San Andreas is certainly a possibility, as is a fictionalized New Orleans or Texas, I'm not really sure where DC came from but it would also make sense on the social commentary side of things to be able to use politicians and the federal government in the game.

There's really no evidence it's going to be in or place or another, I'm not sure if the "V" in the title is as important as everything is making it to be or if they just used a V that looks like its from a dollar bill. It could have some hint towards the federal government but then again that's kind of a stretch and there's no other evidence to link it toward DC anyway. I'm just trying to think of directions they could go crime-genre-wise to further the series. I hope you all have enjoyed this thread and GTA as much as I have, and I'm sure I'll be pleasantly surprised with whatever Rockstar reveals tomorrow.

Does that mean that this new one is bound to be in the present day as well... Can't they backtrack or have they told all the stories that can be told in classic settings?

    Not true.

GTA III was set in 2001 (time was never really mentioned, but it was a contemporary setting, so it's 2001). Then VC took it back 15 years.

And dont quote me but I think GTA II was set in like 2015 or so.. way in the future.

What are the possibilities of GTA V being set in VC?

If IV was any indication, it's that they went back to III's setting. Liberty City, dealing with mobsters, main character who really had no power or say in affairs, hell they even give you Claude Speed's clothes in a condo when you kill that one black guy.

If would make sense if the next one is more Scarface-esque, like VC.

    My bad.
I really wouldn't want a modern GTA set in the future.
A big part of the charm is the music and of course there would be retro stations but what about contemporary music for whatever time it is set in?
If they made it up it would most likely be awful in comparison to the "real" music, if they left it out it would be cheap in its own way.

I'd either do it in the present and wouldn't go further than the 60s in terms of past.
