So how you guys enjoying the release.
I'll summarise what has happened so far.
    >Lead dev writes a letter of apology in advance saying he had to cut some stuff out at the last moment but will fix it and put it back in within the first week after release
    >Game is released
    >The steam version is a very old beta version
    >Forum crashes from complaints
    >Game requires steam to update and install so no matter where you bought it from it 'updates' the game to the beta version
    >After many hours of waiting a new patch is released which is supposedly "The version we were supposed to have on release day"
    >Steam patches the old beta version
    >This new version we have is exactly the same only the options button is greyed out in the menu

Well my most anticipated game this year just became the worst release in the history of mankind?

    I find this disasterpiece hilarious.

I played and loved Sword of the Stars 1, but Kerberos is not a group known for their stable releases. Jesus, Fort Zombie NEVER got fixed from being a buggy unplayable piece of shit. They did indeed. To be fair it isn't entirely representative of their work, SotS Complete is a fantastic 4x game that runs perfectly fine. Fort Zombie was supposed to be a prototype they released of the engine for a SotS RPG called NorthStar. It was supposed to show off the engine and give them practice for the real game they wanted to make. The problem was they then decided to slap a price tag on what was essentially an alpha of a game with a fantastic concept. It ran like shit, was filled with bugs, and was almost literally unplayable with all the issues and broken shit, and they never really did anything about it. I have no idea what decisions lead to this, but it certainly killed my goodwill to the company.

As Sanev said, more Star Trek then Starwars but defininting videogames by TV Series is hard.

Think a 4x game like MOO, Gal Civ etc.

its kinda hard to compare it to any specific game because its unique but I'll try to compare it to Gal Civ - in some aspects like Diplomacy its a more watered down Gal Civ, in other aspects it surpasses Gal Civ - for example Dynamic research.

heres a rundown of the highlights from the game:

-Random events that can make and break you, A.I. Rebellions and Swarms of nano-replicating locus can fuck you up - or fuck up the enemy (Actually, there is some played who adapted A.I. Rebellion as a suicide tactic - if you're losing then try to make A.I. rebel in your Empire and hope that they will attack your enemy more then you.

-Chance-based Tech tree, the tech tree isn't static like in all the other games - there is a chance you might hit a dead end so you cant just rush to the best Beam weapon - you might get stoped 1, or two or even several tiers below it. this forces you to adapt which makes for a fun game.

-Fuel requirements - you cant just send out an fleet to the otherside of the galaxy without fuel.
    >> Anonymous 10/29/11(Sat)05:35 No.115135985
    >>115135959

-Races have unique FTL methods - Humans travel Via node fractures and therefore can only go in the fractures lanes, this makes them the fastest but only if theres a proper lane, otherwise they travel very slowly. Liir have a unique FTL that is effected by the gravity wells you pass through - less gravity wells the faster you go which makes means for long distances you travel more quickly then other. Hivers dont have FTL but they can build gates that link to other gates that allow instant travel (1 turn) between them no matter the distance and no matter the fuel requirements, outside of gates they travel very slowly. but they have a tech that gives them Free fuel on the road. Morrigi's FTL is based on the fleet size - more ships = faster travel and so on... not going to list all the races.

-Races have unique ship design - Hivers are heavily armored but slow. Humans have good combat mobility and good broadside weapons but lack front weapons - this means in tactical combat they have to line up broadside to attack which gives the enemy a bigger surface to hit and so on, not going to list all races.

-Hybrid gameplay similar to Total War. there is turn based overworld map and tactical combat in the planetary scale.

Not in my experience. 7/10 games tech tree is more or less as it should be, due to law of averages. 1/10 games you have no fucking tech at all and get facetrolled. Another 1/10 you have every fucking tech in the tree and rape everything. The final 1/10 you have an interesting tech dilemma.

Only because the dev team didnt bother his astronomical accuracy.

too bad that when you blow up the "star" in the middle of the galaxy the entire galaxy doesn't blow up too.

    Scale is exponential.
If you can get enough of an economy, you could have a ship that dwarfs the galaxy it's in.

Getting an economy to support this is impossible! And even if so the build time changes too - have fun spending months in real life waiting for the ship to be built in game on max speed.

ofcourse... maybe if you cheat..... BRB! going to try to build a ship in the scale of my last 5 digit post.

    >Reading about a megaship in Star Ruler
    >This is a 10.000.000 (10 Million) scale ship in Star Ruler. It took several hours to build on 10x game speed. It is armed with a big useless railgun that does 1.310.000.000.000 damage. It is still useless, because it takes 15 hours gametime to reload after the first shot. I forgot to put smaller guns on it. It is indestructible, because it has 286.000.000.000.000 Hitpoints and is regenerating 3.260.000.000.000 Hitpoints per second. It has a size 625.000 Hangar, which means it can easily store thousands of regular fleets or a couple of "normal" DeathStars. It has two remote armor repairers that repair 216.000.000.000hp/s each. Crew is 125.000.000. Acceleration of 1.23 is not too bad but it can travel with a jump drive of course.

    >15 hours to reload the main gun
... Wouldn't that be the equivalent of entire decades in that game? Is there entire generations of loaders passing the techniques of their elders onto younger generations, awaiting the day of the great calibration?

In SotS 1, you have to research such things as being able to see everything your ships can see on the tactical battle overlay or being able to order them from it, unlike a normal game which would give you that ability from the start.

Damm i was so looking forward to this game but if this is what they consider a release version then fuck I want a refund. The game is at least 6 to 9 months from release in its current state.

To be a faster and simpler way to see everything that's going on, as well as see ship health, however you have to research to be able to do anything worthwhile with it, so there's not much reason to use it except to double space to bypass that stupid entering the system animation that allows ships to fire on you before you can do anything.
    >> Anonymous 10/29/11(Sat)09:26 No.115149687
    >>115149511
...Why didn't they just call the release off? Say "the game is not fucking ready stop the presses!". Did paradox really push the deadline that hard? I think paradox is to be blamed here instead of kerberos.

    >>115149687
Kerberos also started the (closed) beta test like less than a week before the release. It's pretty much was always going to be a beta version.
    >> Anonymous 10/29/11(Sat)09:29 No.115149825
    >>115149687

Both are to blame - the dev (keroberos) knows full well how much crap they need to fix. And Paradox for green-lighting it for a release. So one side decides to lie and the other side allows the lie to continue, look at it like that.
    >> Anonymous 10/29/11(Sat)09:33 No.115150113
    >>115149511

And its not just that it is buggy, I can handle a buggy release. Half the fucking game simply isn't included in the current version. The AI doesn't work, half the textures for menu items are not there, the options menu is disabled, you can't fit half the weapons on the ships and it crashes every 10 turns. Even in today's release it and patch it culture this is a fucking joke and the developers should be ashamed. I can only hope that it was publishers who forced this release and not Kerberos.
