I learned a lot about fashion and now avoid dressing just jeans and hoodies.

I learned that washing my hair every day was making my hair fall flat on my head because of the lack of oils that are needed for a healthy scalp, so I now I wake up and don't even need to brush my hair to look like it's styled in a fairly fashionable way, and can just slip on some casual clothes that make it look like I was trying to look nice.

I dunno, I bought a really nice cashmere wool winter coat for under 300 from macy's. Really a nice classic looking long coat that's great for professional and casual occasions, and it's super warm. It seems to me that there's a certain "prestige" coast much beyond this. My old man has a rough wool coat he bought back in the 70's that he still wears. But the stylishness and comfort of the material of my coat to his is infinitely higher. So... I dunno I'm guessing he was going for a high nice coat but then paying 500 extra for a nice label.

For this guy, fashion/style is probably a hobby (a hobby which objectively improves your life). The PS3 was something like £350, and will last for about 10 years. Assuming you buy one game just over once every 2 months during that time at £60 a pop then after 10 years you will have spent ~£4000 on a hobby that society hates and can only be neutral or detrimental to your life and you will have little to show for it at the end.

A £1000 will get compliments constantly, boosting self-esteem, and will last between 5 and 50 years depending on the level of care and style of coat. Being well dressed makes you more successful at life so he may even make a profit after a short time, and have a nice coat to show for it all. Most people spend £50-£150 on a coat every year or two anyway, so its cheaper in the long run.

It makes sense if you have that level of disposable income, honestly.
