How would you make an esport /v/? What would the genre be and how would you go about making it competitive?

Quake 3 is already the one true esport.

I wouldn't. No successful competitive game was designed with competition in mind.

this, except I'd toss in some other games just to add a bit of variety

    Interesting thread; I'll indulge

Obviously the genre must be of a competitive nature. How one defines what "competitive" can be based purely around what genre they personally like, what they genre they personally feel requires more skill. In that, FPS players who are skilled know to be a great player you must have amazing map awareness, pinpoint accuracy and reflexes that can arguably be the best in the world (spray and pray aside). RTS players understand you simply cannot go into a game, build shit and attack. There is a meta game, there is -actual- strategy being implemented and one must know every unit in his or her arsenal, including their enemies arsenal, on top of dozens, of not hundreds of build orders and timing attacks. FIGHTERS require memorization of combos, understanding of all available fighter choices and much like FPS require a strong reflex sensitivity. Though admittedly I feel Fighters are the lesser of the three, but that means they are no less competitive.

How would I go about making it competitive? What type of asinine question is that? If your question was inquiring on making a -new- genre of game, I'm not going to sit around and brainstorm on YOUR next project. Don't be so snide. I'll give you this however: Competitive nature stems from a goal to be achieved, means which require skill to achieve said goal, and an opponent on equal or preferably greater standing than you to make it challenging. Doesn't matter what genre it is, incorporate these elements and it will be a great e-Sport.

There are plenty games that require skill, but the MOST skill based FPS ever created is Quake 3/Live.

In terms of RTS, Starcraft Brood War or Starcraft 2 I think that are an esport, and I don't know the hardest Fighting Game but I think MvC 2 is considered an esport.

If you want to make an esport, try to make a FPS in where all guns are good, but depending on your style and distance the gun changes it's effectiveness.
