Odd Ball Games (add to the list /v/ let's introduce people to some great oddball games):

    >Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Seriously, was there any sort of hint a game like this would be made? It took elements of other games, squashed them together and came out with something hilarious and enjoyable.

I'll probably never play another RTS that's quite this weird in an oddly maniacal sort of way. When I was down there on the ground with my troops, and let loose some world ending spell, I actually felt like I'd done something huge and epic because of the scale and my perspective of the world.

I played this when it first came out, and, while there were other populous games and other god games none of them ever felt quite like this. Remember when God games like Black & White were coming back and people were asking for terrain deformation, so that you'd feel like a god? And the response was that machines couldn't handle it? Well, this game did the mass terrain deformation YEARS before that, and it was from Bullfrog which just tells you how far below Bullfrog Lionhead was.

No way I can make an oddball game thread without mentioning this little gem. You're an evil entity and you're making your dungeon and heroes try to invade it and you have to use traps and creatures and mazes to fend them off. Just do it. You'll love it.

This gets overshadowed by Diablo so easily, but it's just so quirky and fun, and not to mention the endings. Yeah, I said endings, multiple endings isn't something you usually expect from something that - at first - appears to be a Diablo Clone. This and Divine Divinity are easily two of the most odd and enjoyable "supposed" Diablo-Clones that are ... actually better than Diablo 1 or 2 ever were.

Yeah, I know if you take it in context of what it was supposed to be, it's pretty disappointing. However, for you world builders and creature builders, you can make some truly visually striking worlds, cities, vehicles and creatures - it's fun in its own right even if it's not what a lot of you wanted. If you're the creative player the sandbox player there's value for your dollar in this now that it's much, much cheaper.

Oh god, Dominus, you want Real Time Strategy? This was one of those old games that was an RTS before they became very "samey". You're an evil overlord, and your have a giant castle surrounded by your towns and lands. You start the game and you're already being invaded by clans of various species - from all sides. All fucking sides. Set up traps. Capture them. Torture them for info. Put them into your fusing chamber and turn them into hybrid monsters. Let the monsters loose to destroy their former comrades. Research magic and new traps. Collect ingredients and parts for your magic and traps. Make deals with the enemy clans, turn them against one another or get some of them to work for you. Command your generals (yes you have generals) to handle tasks on the side for you,e ach general having RPG-like stats that mean they're better for some tasks than others such as having one manage troops to gather ingredients while another manages defenses. Dominus. This game did not let up.

When this came out people I knew that liked Secret of Mana used to bash this game so hard. Luckily I see some people on /v/ that are on the same plane as me, that see this game for the somewhat easy but very, very deep game it is that let you go in depth with crafting, magic making, pet raising, golem making, and even tweaking your combat abilities by combining base abilities like crouch and jump to create new abilities like high jump that could be combined to make further abilities plus your weapon techniques. This is one of those gems from the golden age of Console JRPGs and there's no question as to why, despite some misgivings by some when it first came out, that it's been able to stand the test of time.

The JRPG is often criticized, sometimes fairly, for being linear. Well, the SaGa series of games has almost always kicked that notion in the teeth. Games like Romancing SaGa 3 and this PS1 gem SaGa Frontier go far and away from the usual linear concept of a JRPG. Picking of from several characters you can cross paths with all manner of characters, including those you could choose to play as, and explore a strange fantasy/sci-fi mixed world of robots, monsters and corporations with deep pools of skills and abilities spread out across various styles such as unarmed and gun to sword, dual sword and even various schools of magic that can be mixed, matched and some even cancelling each other out.

You're from an alien species. You've got a team of 4. You kill other aliens that have infested your (?) planet. When you kill them, they drop pieces of their flesh which you absorb, thereby absorbing their DNA. In this way you can - from that point on - use the special abilities of those species like having a machine gun or a mortar as your arm, running faster, etc.
It's a nice RPG and allows you to distribute your "DNA points" as you see fit, so you can specialize certain squadmates.

I know, I know, so much Bioware hate, but let's look at this title. It wasn't as deep in combat or gear as some games, but let's appreciate just how out of the ordinary it was for a western developer to release. While it's definitely not the best game on the list, it has its inspired moments and ideas that really set it apart from many other western RPGs. Don't expect the world, but give this one a chance if you wondered what a Kung Fu RPG might look like.

This game shouldn't have worked as well as it did, and it did have its flaws, but it was still a weirdly enticing experience. You play as a young man that wakes up in a lab with a splitting headache, has superior mental powers, takes drugs to give him further powers, and who is always on the verge of migraines that will kill him if he doesn't take a drug to lessen the effects, the effects getting so bad as to cause people's heads to explode when he goes near them. It's sort of a survival horror in some ways, but you're the horror, guards running away as you clutch your head in pain while their comrade's heads explode like gorey fireworks.

Think of an RTS where you have to build a base with factories, turrents etc.

You're an alien on earth and fight other aliens over the heads of humans which give you their respective abilities, e.g. a racedrivers head will give you a tiny car in which you drive around. Great fun, though it didn't age well, graphics wise. Early 3D isn't anything to look at anymore.

Sure OP, I'll include the two great games I never see /v/ discuss

    >Rez

It's trippy and awesome. You are infiltrating an AI consciousness as it's becoming self-aware. The music is great, the art style is great, and the controls are solid. Look up game footage if you want to know how it plays because it is definitely a unique experience. You used to only be able to get it on the PS2 but they now sell it on the Xbox Live marketplace as an HD remake. The PS2 version will run you around $60 if you MUST play it in the original format, but the HD remake is much better and far less expensive.

It's pretty much like Rez, except MUCH harder. It is also more rewarding. You can time your shots with the beat for extra points far better than you can in Rez, and as a result the whole game becomes much more intense.

I thought I was the only person who ever played that game! You forgot to mention that it plays just like the old Resident Evil games, with the fixed cameras and survival-horrorish feel.

    >Pathologic
As far as I remember you start out visiting a small town to interview a person who calls himself immortal. Ironically, as soon as you arrive you hear the news: The guy is dead. So after dealing with shelter you go to investigate the death.
Soon after you get visited by weird people who explain that this is a game and you have to save certain people, or otherwise everybody will die. And each night one of them will die if you don't actively prevent their death. Also, there's a virus outbreak going on. So you not only have to care for others, but through the outbreak it's not even easy to care for yourself.

The game is a first person adventure game. You can shoot, you can break into houses. You can trade. Buy food for example. You can starve. Most of the times you run around the fully explorable town to see certain persons to talk with them / do them favors so they'll help you with your quest.

There's also a lot of weird shit going on, strange buildings, with strange purposes.
The game is made by the same developer which created The Void.

Can't help but add Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Ya, that's right, vampires, but these aren't you stupid shitty twilight vampires, they're real vampires, from back when vampires sucked blood, not cock.

It's an RPG in the sense that you actually have stats and can change how your character plays; it's not the kind of RPG you see nowadays where they give you an invetory and slap RPG on it.

If you want to make a sneaky, lockpicking, hacking, refined vampire, you can. Want a completely batshit insane vampire that basically thinks it's a ninja and only can specialize in Melee weapons? You got it.

Also, when I say you can make a a sneaky locking picking one, if you choose one of the clans(Think races in MMO terms. There's I think 6-8) it completely changes how you play the game, as you have to be very sneaky at almost all times and use different routes just to move from mission to mission. Another clan causes EVERY SINGLE bit of text(It's text based for you, though all NPCs have voice over) you say to be completely different, namely because you're fucking insane.

It has multiple endings depending on your choices and how you've acted to key NPCs, and I think there's about 4 or 5 in total.

It does have it's short comings, though. It has plenty of bugs, but there are community made patches still being made that not only fix them, but also add more content to the game; the community plus patch is almost required. It also suffers from the usual thing near the end that "character choice" games do in that you're going to need at least put some points in to some combat skills and defenses- even through the game there ARE some missions where combat is unavoidable.

All in all, it's a kind of game you likely won't see again ever thanks to the usual crap we get any more and the fact that the company has since gone out of buisness. They also made Arcanum, if that rings any bells, and I'm told the original Dues Ex, as well as the Fallout games(At least 1 and 2) are sort of similiar.

Don't look it over just because you see "vampire", it's actually a very good game with a great story, and no, you don't NEED to be familiar with the VtM franchise to enjoy it. I know I wasn't prior to it.

I really can't say enough good things about Sacrifice.

In fact, the game, its gameplay, its mechanics, are so PERFECT, that what flaws I can think of are only noticeable in comparison to the sheer goodness of the rest of the game, like a single stain on a pure white tablecloth.

    This thread is so awesome.

I'll contribute some of my own picks.

Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders and Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes.

While we're on the subject of mixing genres, this is a rts/hacl&slash where you're on the battlefield. You control your character during melee and can execute your usual combos and supers but at anytime you can also open a command map where you can order your whole army around. RTS control with a xbox control is hard but you get used to it. Anyway, cleaving orcs in the two while ordering your cavalry to flank a group of archers is a pretty unique and awesome experience.
