I think the movies do a decent job of establishing the "rules" for your system of magic within a fantasy world. You have to have them, or the suspension of disbelief crumbles. The movies, KotOR 1 (even though it pushed the boundaries of what the force was capable or not capable of with the memory erasing thing), the Jedi Knight series, and even the first Force Unleashed game (though more EXTREME applications of what we know the force can do, it doesn't do anything we didn't know the force could do already.) do a decent job of keeping things in line with the established rules.

The EU on the other hand gives Jedi/Sith in their stories powers that aren't within those rules, powers that become increasingly more and more far fetched

Anakin was supposed to be the most powerful force user to ever exist... and yet in the EU there are tons of force users that dwarf his ability.

In KotOR 2 specifically, you have the power to never die simply by focusing on pain, and the power to devour entire planets "because he was hungry"..

at that point it becomes TOO Far Fetched.

I hate how threads like this never actually have horrible examples of the genre, instead take popular games that have minor or otherwise overlookable aspects and desperately try to be edgy and cool by saying it's the 'worst shit ever' or any said variation.
