Why do you guys hate invisible war? I think it looks rather interesting and would like to play it but choose not to because you guys all say it sucks.

DMC2 syndrome. It's not a bad game, but it's easily the worst of the series.
    >> Anonymous 09/05/11(Mon)20:51 No.109274500
I just started the first game because all the damn hype this series has gotten has put me over the edge. I plan to play Invisible War before I get to the new one. Is this that bad an idea?

Also how related is the third to the first two? Could you skip the first two? Curious even though I decided against that.

It's pretty much the patient zero of consolitis. which is doubly offensive because deus ex is like the poster child of pc gaming

Looking at it with a mind thats lived through the modern gaming generation, compared to what they did to the "spiritual successor" of system shock, fucking xcom as a goddamn generic shooter, and console fps in general nowadays, invisible war will probably be a masterpiece.

It also ran like ass on computers at the time because it was optimized for xbox. And they turned JC Denton into an almighty cunt

The engine is utter shit, looks terrible, is about as expensive to render as the CRYengine, shows your desktop between loading screens, doesn't support either 6:9 or 6:10 as far as I can remember, the voice acting is pure shit, the combat is awful and just walking around feels akward as fuck.

    Nifty physics though.

To be fair. ST1 had so little to do with the source material they could have changed the name of the movie and you would have never made the connection that it was linked to it.

    >The game doesn't minimise during loading, you clearly just have a shit computer.

I have the exact same problems. It drops straight to desktop and you can't tell if the game crashed or is actually loading until it resumes into a loading screen.

ST1 owned. The book is basically raw shit from Heinlein's excessively poopy butt.

Anyway, the erason people hate Invisible War is that it is terrible. Setting aside the stupid narrative and terrible systems design, Deus Ex is a game that lives and dies on the strength of its level design. On the strength of fairly open levels, multiple paths, SSMA, etc, etc.

The thing is, Deus Ex 2 was written on one of the worst engines ever. It's true! Unreal 2 didn't do thet hings they wanted it to. So one of their coders was all "Look, I'll just write a new level loader and lighting system" and he wrote a whole bunch of shit, quit/got fired abruptly, and disappeared without any documentation. It turned out that his systems stank, so levels had to be very small and enclosed.
    >> Anonymous 09/05/11(Mon)21:11 No.109276440
    TINY fucking maps.
    Unified ammo.
Retarded fucking plot that tried to accommodate all the endings of Deus Ex.
Main character is an annoying douche bag.
None of the organizations make any fucking sense.
Really fucking shitty augmentation system, which had extremely limited character customization options compared to the first game.
There's probably a million other things that sucked but this is all I can remember, been a long time since I played it.

I am over 18. Which is why I know that Heinlein was a shit writer who never wrote a good book.

He's not like Asimov where he was a shit writer that wrote ground-breaking books and improved dramatically over the course of his multi-decade career. Heinlein was just shit all the way through.

Over-simplification of nearly everything that made the original awesome:

Universal ammo; every gun used a different amount per shot to balance this.

Skill points/proficiencies completely gone, character progression/development to be done only through augmentations and weapon mods(which they themselves had been simplified).

Areas were microscopic compared to the original game, a point made so painfully clear at the end of the game during which a revisit to a location in the original that was once one large singular area is divided into...many(5? or more) areas.

And then the plot, perhaps the most painful of deus ex 2's crimes. You play as a character who seems to have no emotional investment in anything, and not in the gruff, hardened way. S/he will stare with that same wide-eyed vapid look that every fucking single other npc in the game shares during conversations and consistently give off the impression that s/he's too fucking stupid to care. During what is undoubtedly the worst way to start a deus ex game, you'll meet the other cast of dipshits you'll be asked to endure for the rest of the game, over the course of which the plot of the original will be surgically torn to shit. Example: the entire premise of invisible war is built on the foundation that all 3 endings of the original somehow happened simultaneously.

Other than that, its an ok game. Its just a fucking horrid deus ex.
    >> Anonymous 09/05/11(Mon)21:19 No.109277188
It's not a horrible game OP, and I thoroughly enjoyed it enough to finish it. If I had to make a half-ass comparison off the top of my head, it'd be comparing Morrowind and Oblivion, or maybe System Shock 2 and Bioshock. SS2 had its flaws but those pretty much melted away because you were enjoying the game so much. Then Bioshock comes along, neatly packaged and cleaned up for the console audience. For whatever reason, its flaws are more glaring and you're less wililng to forgive them. But in the end, Bioshock is still a fairly enjoyable game even though it's not really SS2.

I think Invisible War and Human Revolution fall somewhere in between the two examples above.

the endings of deus ex lead to such widely different outcomes that it feels impossible to make a scenario that accommodates them all.

how does JC empower the illuminati, blow up area 51(plunging the world into a new darkage), and at the same time merge with an ai which, according to the game itself, sends him into a coma?

Keep wondering, because the plot of invisible war never even attempts to explain
