>No, he did what he was made to do. Nothing that happened was truly of his choice at all. He is a puppet. Untrue.
Griffith
did in fact have a choice, just like any apostle. It wasn't much of an
option (accept his pathetic fate or fuck over the Hawks) but no one
forced him into anything. Yes, he was goaded into making that choice by
Ubik, but ultimately it came down to Griffith and his beliefs. If he pay
attention, we know that he was already likely to choose himself over
the Band of the Hawk, and the only reason he required any nudging in
that direction was because they meant a great deal to him.
Honestly,
it would have made a lot less sense, given everything we'd been told
about his character, if he'd have chosen to sacrifice his dream for the
sake of his soldiers. The Band of the Hawk was incredibly dear to him,
but we already knew that above all he viewed them as a means to an end.
He had already made it clear that the Band of the Hawk, however much he
loved it, was merely the vessel which would carry him to his dream .
It's
funny because that's the reason that Guts left (he didn't see the Hawks
as "friends") and Guts leaving was what ultimately set everything in
motion leading up to the Eclipse.
Yes it was all predetermined.
Behelits don't get found by "accident" after all, but to say that
Griffith never had any say in the matter is ridiculous. You should
instead consider that he was chosen for his role in the grand scheme of
things *because* he was the type of person who would make the "right"
choice. |
