I've been doing pretty cheap cosplays of video game characters at Comic Con for years now. I've mastered the art of making a costume that costs less than $50 whilst also looking awesome.

Plan on going as a legionnaire from New Vegas next month at Comic Con.

Back is made of silicon + plaster + paint on a tank top. Fortunately I have very very very many connections with Hollywood and the costume business, so if I ever need help with a basic project, I can ask a friend.

I made the back piece with a friend of mine who was once on Myth Busters because he mainly makes life like masks, for those who watch the show, you might know what I'm talking about.

I heard it is illegal to bring "real" looking weapons to cons. You have to paint some part of them orange.

I dressed as Big Boss for a college halloween party once, not sure if that counts.
It was a kickass costume too, I wore my old army uniform with vintage webbing, and spent ages making an genuine-looking eyepatch out of cloth hotglued over card. Didn't shave for a few days prior too. Like half-a-dozen random guys came up to me and shook my hand.

Not entirely true. The gun does not need an orange tip, but you cannot enter the con before getting it checked with security. They mark the weapon as safe with a little sticker, and people will randomly ask for you to show it to them. I've brought fake realistic weapons (old movie props) to cons that had no orange tips and security checked me out and let me through. I don't know if things have changed since then though, so you may be right.

PS, you can often find prop guns or airsoft guns at Army surplus, which is what I meant.

You know, I always thought about how easy it would be to do that. Plus security never check bags, so you could bring a disassembled weapon in a bag, go in, assemble it in a bathroom, and you wouldn't look out of place at all carrying a real fucking weapon.

Always kind of creeped me out, but there is enough security there that you a gunman would not be able to last very long without getting shot/tazed/sacked.

Most gunmen who go on rampages of any kind are loud and arrogant. --The people who attend conventions are the kind who generally don't go outside because they have agoraphobia.

The "the quiet guy is going to shoot up our school one day!" stereotype is pretty much 100% wrong; every crazed shooter in American history has been loud, obnoxious, and has warned people out loud that he'd shoot them one day. But people prefer to focus on the quiet ones for no reason.
