Even though it's nowhere near the experience of post-launch SWG, at least I can use the SMGEmu to relive the feeling of hanging in the cantina, or going off and exploring the wilderness.

There will never be another MMO that even comes close to being what SWG was in te beginning though. Everything now is just a WOW clone, and retarded devs/pubs don't understand that people that want a wow style game will just play wow. Trying to copy it will just guarantee that your game fails, just like when SWG failed after they changed it from a completely new, innovative, and freeform game into yet another clone. Herp derp'n on the highest level.

It's still painful to think about because SWG was so much fun, and something so new

I played it back in the day and it was truly an amazing experience.

The devs fucked up by giving too much power to melee classes, which in turn made the entire game really awkwardly balanced.
The end game was teraskasi/fencer/pikemen beating the shit out of cavemen and nightsisters while buffed and invulnerable.
    It was ridiculous.

But the actual world and items and everything related to that was amazing.

even if they finish it completely, it still won't be the same as 2003 SWG because there won't be nearly as many people playing meaning that like 3/4 of the galaxy will be a ghost town as opposed to having bustling towns all over the place.

    Never again will you experience

    >Rebel and Imperial clashes between Anchorhead and Bestine
    >Hanging at the cantina, listening to music, watching the dancers as explores come and go, telling about their adventures
    >join a group of 20 fortune seekers as they traverse miles of desert searching for the Kryat graveyard
    >join a gathering to watch a fireworks display in the middle of the city
    >run into another lone explorer at his small campsite out in the middle of nowhere wilderness, have a seat and chat with him a while before going your separate ways
    >hunt down a smuggler to slice your weapon, only to be caught with it by Storm Troopers and have it confiscated
    >Be a capitalist pig and go from hawking crafted goods on the side of the street, to having a huge business empire complete with multiple stores, NPC employees, harvesters around the galaxy, and a huge wind farm for power.

The NGE was atrocious. They took out all customization from the most amazing class system ever, took an epic truly hard to attain alpha class and made it so everyone and their grandmother could start out as a jedi. Not to mention how much content they cut out by screwing everyone over.

    >That feel when all these people loved their professions.

Yeah man, thats one thing about this game, everyone was really passionate about their profession. People took those non-combat roles for the love of them, and for the love of the social aspect of the game. You can't find this in games anymore.

In games like wow people pick classes based on "what is the best" or what will give them the biggest advantage in combat. They don't pick out for the sole joy of it, or the sole purpose of helping others.

I was a fucking chef, because I love cooking irl, and because I loved crafting my foods and selling them to others in cantinas. I was useless in a battle for the most part, but I didn't care, I was really passionate about the foods I made, and loved selling or giving them away to others.

Same with the fashion designers who did nothing but do peoples hair all day, or the tailors who sat in their shop and let people try on clothes all day, or the musicians who would just sit in the cantina and play music all day. Those people did that for the sheer love of it, and yet NO mmo these days allows them to do that again.

I played wow for a bit at the behest of my friend, and the first thing I asked was "can I craft or cook food?", and they responded with "yes, you can totally do that!"
    >> Anonymous 06/24/11(Fri)17:07 No.100067986

Welp, anyone who has tried wow knows just what kind of "crafting" it has. the bullshit kind. I wasn't a chef, I was a combat class just like every single other person in the game, but I could click some shit sometimes and poop out a piece of meat or something. Nothing was custom, nothing was actually created, it was just, get this, click this, there ya goo.

Fuck that noise, and yet that's all crafting is in EVERY mmo these days. I need a game where I can actually be a crafter again, finding the various resources, choosing how to create the recipes, actually having a crafting process, selling the completed goods around the world, expanding my business as it gets more popular.

    UGH

fuck this world, just give us want me want game industry. Obviously every wow clone fails, so just make something different, like SWG was. People WILL play it.

    >eventually, while we were attacking some banthas and chilling in a camp afterwards, a CSM appears and casually asks "do you guys have a camping license?"

I remember seeing this game on a store shelf once, back in the day. I loved Star Wars and tried to convince my parents to buy it for me, but considering how jewy and paranoid they were, refused due to monthly fees.

I only found out after a couple years that the entire game was essentially redesigned to become a boring piece of garbage.

Here I am once again, reading about how glorious and open this game was.

mfw it will probably be ~10 years (if ever) until we finally start seeing MMOs veer away from EQ/WoW-clone material.

Aren't there private servers for it or something? Couldn't we find a well-populated one and try to bring this game back?

It was made at the end of beta, just before launch. I remember watching this thing over and over (I was in beta too) and was so excited to see what the game would become when it finally launched. The potential was amazing.

Now it's so sad to see just want we lost. It's a man on his death bed, who wasted his whole life, looking back and seeing the starry eyed child he was, with such hopes for the future, but he knows that all those dreams will never come true, and he'll be a broken man with a wasted life at the end....

Hell, the true focus of SWG was in prospecting, surveying, mining and crafting stuff. Creating player made cities from scratch that could very well be bigger than the cities of Naboo was equally as powerful.

A truly player-run economy and even systems of government.

SWGEmu and SWGANH are working on it.. it's far from done, it's taken them ages to get where they are right now.
    But still.
I've never seen a game with such a loyal fanbase of veterans who long for the old times.

You always have the "it used to be better" guys.. be it WoW or TF2 now, but SWG is really another level, can't even compare the current game to what it used to be.

Jesus christ the profession system alone. The choices you had. Fucking fantastic. From architect to tailor to creature handler, doctor, musician and dancer to pistoleer, brawler and of course jedi..

Another thing I really hated was how they went about with the jedi system.

Here's the deal. ALMOST EVERYONE wants to be a jedi. I get it. It's iconic and probably THE first thing people think of when you mention Star Wars.
But do you realize how awesome it would've been for permadeath to stay and to have a limit of.. let's say.. 20-30 jedi per server?

They fucking have to play like hermits, for a good reason.
Fuck countless jedi sitting around Theed spaceport, they better hide and work on their skills and meditate and all.

Had I had the option to vote for "limit jedi even if it means I will personally never become one", I would've fucking voted for it.
This WHOLE GAME would have been fun even without the jedi.
Holocron grinding ruined it already. People who didn't care for being an entertainer macroed away those professions. People who didn't like crafting grinded through it.. etc. Why ? WHY?

    ramble ramble...

No, it really wouldn't be still alive.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOVED pre-cu. SWG pre-cu is, and will always be my favorite game that I've ever played. But there was SO much wrong with the game at the time. SWG was just bleeding subscribers, mainly to WoW. That's when they thought up the CU, which was, in their minds, supposed to bring in an influx of new players.

Obviously it just made the problem worse.

Now, the CU was still playable. It wasn't nearly as good as the last, but in some ways, I enjoyed the CU more than pre-cu, mainly because it was a time when I actually started to get money and buy good weapons/armor.

But, than the NGE came... which was the final nail in the coffin.

Oh well. We had a good run, and once the Emu finishes, we'll get to start all over again.

Pic related... battles like this were so fucking fun. Imps vs Rebel battles were just a blast to participate in. Only problem being (well, for me) was that I had a SHIT computer back then. Geforce 5300FX, 1GB of RAM, and a P4 processor. Note the 15FPS...

These are my exact feelings when it comes to Jedi.
In fact, as I was first reading about the game, this is what caught my eye the most.

It made the Jedi what they really were. Unique, special, rare, and very careful. The fact that I knew there were only a handful at any given time put a smile on my face, even though I wasn't one. When everyone is special, no one is.

To this day, I still turn Jedi off in Battlefront 2.

It was like logging in after a zombie apocalypse had claimed all of the people.

Before me I saw the skeletons, shells of cities that remained behind after the players had all left. A momentary testiment to the glory of the people who lived there before. In time, these shells were swallowed by the earth. Unlike when a tree falls, new life did not spring forth on these once-fertile plains, and before my eyes I saw a barren wasteland grow, devoid of the life, culture, and personality that had once made this digital world seem, for just a moment, real.

I played a bounty hunter and I sucked at it. I admit. I was a newbie when it came to MMOs, and I had no fucking idea what I was doing. But the first time I did a bounty hunter mission. Holy crap. The feel was indescribable. When you finally found your target after chasing him around the galaxy for a few hours... I was literally sweating like a pig. I was so nervous like never in my life. The story ended with my ass getting kicked due to my stupidity. I got killed so many times by my marks it wasn't even funny. Fuck that, it was fun as fuck and even after 20 deaths I never gave up. Then it finally happened. I found my mark grinding on Dantooine with a group of 4-5 people. I casually approached and asked if I could join the hunt. The thing is, I did not look like a bounty hunter at all. I did not have the weapons they used, nor the armor. I looked like a novice marksman. So there we were, grinding on Dantooine, and at one point the Jedi dropped low on health 'cause he was getting buttraped by a bunch of bols / whatever the other thing were called, and that's when I decided to strike. He fell down, and I got a message that my prize was transferred to my account. I was so fucking proud of myself I wanted to cry.

That was the best feeling I felt in a game, ever. Nothing ever came even close to this.

    Yeah, each planet was HUGE.

It could take you 45 min to an hour just to go from 1 corner of the planet to the other, and that was only if you were piloting a Swoop; the fastest vehicle in the game.

Before vehicles, it took forever to go places, but usually those times were some of the best.

I remember when I first started playing, vehicles weren't as common. I joined up with a group in Mos Eisley, Tatooine. We were all very low skilled, mostly Marksmans, Brawlers, maybe 1 Rifleman.

We decided to trek out across the planet, hunting anything we could find along the way. If we got too wounded, we would set up camp. We had a couple musicians/dancers around, and they would play/dance, while we laughed and chatted around the fire. Then we would get back to the action, hunting Squills, Banthas, Tuskens (the ones that didn't rape us that is) and so many other critters...

I managed to get to Novice Pistoleer that day, and purchase my first Scout Blaster.

When depopulation becomes so much of a problem that you actually need to recruit the current players to help you take down the mess, you fucked up.

    >Fuck. So my house was still there even though I made it like 6 years ago?

No, son, they are all gone now. The sun set on those day long ago. All that's left is the cold emptiess, the void.

Perhaps this void is a metaphor? Perhaps the void itself is a story? One could tell their children tales of adventure and glory, of their second life in Star Wars Galaxies, then log in and show said children what remains now. Show them the barren wasteland that is men's hearts when money is concerned. Show them what happens when you trust George Lucas.

    Never again.

It sucks that there are so many people who just want to play as a Jedi. It may be the drawing point of the entire universe (especially nowadays), but too much of a good thing...

It is crazy. When I was a kid and all we had were the original movies and games that either followed the movies OR had something to do with X-Wings and TIE Fighters or Rebels and Stormtroopers (and not Jedi), I didn't want to be a Jedi. Neither did my friends. We wanted to be Han Solo or Stormtroopers or X-Wing pilots.

Now it's just lightsaberlightsaberlightsaber force power choreography. They aren't even like the superheroes we envisioned them to be anymore, they're Fencers except with a fancy sword.

When the Jedi first unlocked in SWG, four of my clanmates were already extremely close to getting it by chance. A huge amount of players just went grinding for holocubes or whatever. I'm left all alone being a content Pistoleer/Scout/Ranger.

    Jedi make me sad.

SWG classic had such a good grasp on it too. Jedi weren't just some profession you went to school for, it was almost mythical. The reason jedi were so awesome was because of how hard it was to become one, and how rewarding.

Haha, I hear ya... although I never got had a BH myself, as a Jedi, being hunted by a BH had the exact same thrill as hunting.

I remember ALWAYS having to watch over my shoulder. Grinding out in the wilderness, far away from anyone who might see my lightsaber and report my position. That feel when you're in the middle of nowhere, and suddenly you see a blue blip on your radar... you call your swoop, only to have it blow up by the now red blip on your radar.

You activate Force Run. Trying as hard as you can to live. You manage to temporarily outrun the BH, and call a spare Swoop you had in your inventory. With adrenaline pumping, you manage to accelerate to full speed; the BH right behind you but unable to attack until he gets closer. You then lead him on a chase across the planet, trying to get to your house that's located on the other side of the planet.

That feel when you finally reach your hometown, but suddenly find out that he wasn't the only BH chasing you... you then get dizzy/KD'd by the TK/BH hybrid waiting by your house (who after learning my name, conducted research into where I lived), and soon raped by the BH who had been chasing you.

That feel when you eventually make friends with those 2 BH's, and eventually go hunting with them on your secondary character. Friends for life...

That feel imagining a new Bounty Hunter, nervous, sweaty, inexperienced, and prone to failure trying over and over for his whole life until he finally hunts a Jedi through trickery and deceit, starting with one little piece, the change into a heartless, efficient hunter who makes more than a respectable living.

If you ask me, the players behind the bounty hunter characters in SWG were, and will always remain, the best roleplayers ever. I knew a lot of bounty hunters in the game, and they were all extremely friendly and helpful, but when it came to bounty hunting, the player would always turn into a ruthless motherfucker. He did not care that he's destroying the fruit of another players' labor, he did not care that someone might quit playing because of him, all he cared about were the god damn credits. Yes.. and they should have kept it that way.
Permadeath was good. For it stopped them from ruining the immersion (mind you this plays between ep III and IV, there aren't even SUPPOSED TO BE A TON OF JEDI RUNNING AROUND) by dueling in Theed and shit.

The elusive jedi hermit.. and the visibility system and all that..
Almost everything makes me shed a tear. Even the more basic things like the atmosphere of a cantina or just how detailed and complex the resource system was.

Or just exploring. Shit do I love exploring.. and the world was so HUGE.
Creature Handler too man. I was so passionate about it. It wasn't just "lol hurr a lvl 10 wolf I'ma tame him and name him Owl to confuse players in BG" - personally I was really making "a big deal" out of every creature I tamed. They became real buddies and I wouldn't just tame the firat one I saw either.

And then you could use so many of them as mounts, which was awesome too.

Also, I don't know who else was a loyal Tatooine guy but.. do you remember the epic battles between Bestine and Anchorhead?
That was just unreal. The planning, the gathering of fellow players. Proud rebels defending their little Anchorhead from the Imperials marching in.

TK raped everything. It was probably the most overpowered profession in the game, next to Rifleman using a T21 with Strafe2.

I mean really, TK could inflict every single state in the game. Stun/Dizzy/Blind... it could knock you down EASILY. It had insanely high status attack resists. It had meditation, which allowed you to heal your fucking wounds. YOUR FUCKING WOUNDS when there's no doctors/entertainers around.

Fuck, it had a power that could basically revive you from the dead. If you ever got incapped, just press Force of Will, and you're up again!

I was just a FOTM hopping PvPfag until JTL hit, then I was in heaven. I jumped on that shit immediately, hit master pilot on both of my accounts and started charging people 1 mil a pop to solo that corellian corvette for them (which was required for the master box) before anyone else knew how to do it.

Then I used the credits from that and from various other things over the course of a year or so of playing to start a shipwright business. I was one of the most successful on my server (Shadowfire) along with one or two other guys. Made a killing and owned 12 ludicrously kitted out ships (I saved the best stuff for myself), several suits of RIS armor for the lulz and could afford the best PvP shit but space was the most fun I had in SWG by far.

It's true that people really loved their professions in this game. Something for everyone.

I still got to play music in the cantina, or do peoples hair, and explore the wildressness, although there were no creatures or camps at that point.

I think I'm about to go check it out again and see where they are at. Threed cantina was hopping last time I was there (everywhere else in the world was a ghost town though ;_;) It was so sad crusing my old haunt, and being the only living thing within miles and miles.

    That's their own fault.

They made EQ2 into a (rather strikingly beautiful) shell of the first game.

By taking out all of the things people complained about (kill stealling, power leveling, etc) they took out things they never intended. Remember this?

    >You're level 6 fighting an orc in GFay
    >Jesus this thing is beating the crap out of me, and I have no idea where the hell I am
    >Suddenly, out of nowhere, a man in full plate armor with flaming sword
    >He heals you, continues to heal you as you defeat the orc
    >It's dangerous out here, young one. Let me take you back to the city...
    >He takes you back to Kelethin, buys you full leather and a backpack, sends you out to kill more orcs

That kind of interaction is why Everquest works. And the removed it because some people didn't like getting KS'ed.

Yeah, that's the one thing that always killed me. I never got to play SWG on day 1.

I didn't join SWG until... patch 6? At that point, all the crafters had already been established, SWG had a stable economy (well, stable as can be after the credit duping) and there were already Jedi.

Why does SOE want to kill everything we love, /v/?

I see it now, George. We can make millions with this. I can bring back Indiana Jones and he could have an adventure with those ewoks. Listen to this one, George: Ewoks are enslaved by the empire and one lone Ewok called Wicket Schindler stands to fight against the Empire and he will help these Ewoks escape from their captors. We can call it Wicket's List. GENIUS! Wait just a second, George. How about E.T decides to visit Endor. I'M A GENIUS!.

I played from release day to a few months before JtL (stupid economics forced me to cancel...). Shit was fan-fucking-tastic at the time. That first day of play, everything was bugged and wonky as all hell. You could shoot at a nest for a good 10m and it would die. You give up and the shit explodes. There was some stupid problem with registration page so it wouldn't work in IE. Everyone ended up getting Mozilla (before it was Firefox) just so they could register and hopefully log in (after a 3 hour patch over 56k).

I remember how I picked my main profession, Combat Medic. I was in a guild even before the game was released, The Crescent Order on Chilastra. Great bunch of guys. That first week of play we did a whole bunch of shit together like massive hunting roams, using Scout camps along the way for regeneration and stuff. I ended up picking up every starter profession (like everyone else at the time) since so many skill points were available and there was no reason not to. So the camp was full of low level people singing and dancing and running around with the shittiest of Stimpacks while trying to Forage/Prospect.

    cont

Eventually, we decided to get everyone together for a raid on the Imperial base on our home planet, Correlia's moon Talus. Before setting out, our resident medic handed me an ass-ton of decently made stims and the order to keep people up. We made the long trek from out base (which sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking a narrow river) to the Imperial base encountering no resistance along the way. Finally we get there and of course the place is littered with Stormtroopers. Some players as well, but nothing to form an organized defense. We engage. Blasters firing everywhere, people dropping left and right, chaos incarnate. Through it all, I'm running around from player to player, picking up the incaps, trying not to draw attention to myself. We ended up taking over the base... for about 15m before the whole place respawned on us with AT-STs...... That night, I knew what I wanted to do in that game for the rest of my character's life.

I am sorry to see it go. I remember being a master commando and dropping cones of niggas left and right with flame spray 2. It was instant death for anyone within 60M in front of me. I combined it with bounty hunter and just went around spanking people. The flame dot almost assured that no matter what, my mark would not escape. The wounds afterwards too, it was double punishment. First I spray you with my kryat enhanced flame thrower. then I just walk casually away. First shot drops you, then you get right back up...then the dot kicks in and drops you again. Then you get back up...then the third tick kicks in and thats it...you are dead.

I am already on my ship heading back to the bounty boards to collect my cash by then.

god I am sad to see that game go.

It's all about momentum and breaking certain thresholds.

WoW never intended for this, they just strived to be the market leader and managed to fill a void. Everyone else just followed without questioning, which in turn will create new voids. At some point one will become a gaping maw of desire that spoiled and lazy developers can no longer ignore or distort, and they'll be forced to innovate, lest someone beats them to it.

And right there and then, is room for another SWG to be born.
