Visually stunning, but narratively weak and thematically incoherent. What a mess of a film.

read this: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2013/04/09/upstream_color_faq_analysis_and_the_meaning_of_shane_carruth_s_film.html

it was 2deep4me too.

It's another in a long line of modern films that is plagued with fallacious idea that obscurity equates to depth. It's not complex or open-to-interpretation, just intentionally baffling. The kind of film that can only be understood after having it explained by the writer him/herself. Modern art as its finest, really; which is to say art as its worst. It's basically Lynch without the coherence. Just forget about it.

This is precisely what I dislike about the film. There is information given in that article that could not possibly be concluded upon after having watched the movie. Having read it, the story makes perfect sense, but the film itself didn't convey this information in an intelligible way. It's as though Carruth expected the viewer to be psychics who could understand what he was thinking rather than forming his ideas into an intelligible narrative.

People are bashing on it because its widely accessible. There's a lot of dissenting opinions as a result.

Why do you have to have everything spelled out for you? Making it a bit more abstract causes the viewer to use their own experiences to find their own meaning in the film.
>>
This movie is nothing more than a cheap ripoff of Eternal Sunshine, Tree of Life (visuals) and Lost in Translation.
>>
>>32673554

How the fuck was this movie baffling? It did a pretty good job of explaining everything through the shots and the editing. Just because each character doesn't spend multiple scenes explaining everything out loud several times like that shithead Nolan doesn't mean it's a obscure or intentionally baffling.

I watched the film last night and understand everything, save for one question - the origin of the mysterious parasite.

And then I read the slate article, didn't find the answer, and realized how fucking stupid people can be for not understanding everything that happened in the film considering IT FUCKING SHOWS YOU EVERYTHING.

This movie ain't primer, folks - there is no intent to confuse the audience. Like I said, there are better ways to tell the viewer what is happening than having shitty dialogue in which the character inexplicably tells them exactly what is happening.

>>32676142

typical shane carruth fanboys
>>
I haven't seen this but Primer was an atrocious film in literally every respect.
>>
It requires multiple viewings to even grasp the basic plot. If you think that's 'incoherent' rather than 'layered' you should have known better than to watch a Carruth film. It's not like Carruth attempted to create a transparent narrative with obvious themes and failed.
>>
>>32676361

Then you'll absolutely hate this one...

It's not that dumbfounding a movie if you manage to think outside the box a bit and connect the dots while watching. I literally just finished watching Upstream Color not 15 minutes ago and was able to figure out almost all the things mentioned in >>32673341 on my own, in that one view, while watching.
