Thoughts on this film?

One of the only ones I've actually enjoyed Tom Cruise in, plus probably one of Zimmer's best soundtracks.

I really enjoyed it. A film on the shortlist that is awesome to watch while drinking.

it was watanabe's character who was the last samurai

He was the last samurai, just like Daniel Day Lewis was the last of the Mohicans

Good feels, good characters, cool battles. All around solid epic. Maybe a little to "okay" but still it's a movie I would re-watch.

The Last Nigga on Earth
starring Jackie Chan
>>
Fantastic film.

Even though it was the same Dances with Wolves/Avatar/Pocahontas type of thing it was different enough that it worked. Would have liked it to be closer to history but whatever, more romantic this way, I guess.

One thing I didn't like was the romance between cruise and Katsumoto's sister, It should have been enough that she forgave him.But it didn't intrude so it's ok.
>>
It's real good.
It's no Dances with Wolves, but it's good.
I can understand why japs feel there's a racist undertone. Of course the one white guy would be the only survivor in a Samurai village. ;P

The Japanese loved the movie. It was Western critics that thought it had racist overtones.

>great depiction of samurai

>cruise is a good actor
>all dat gorgeous visuals

even if the white man had to take centre stage for such a movie like this to be made it was nice to see such a lush period piece about my homelando great nippon
>>
>>33252775
ok pcbitch....so who was the real last samurai?
you should've been part of the marketing campaign so everyone on Earth could've been set straight.
>>
>>33253122
but the white man did not tale centre stage. the samurai and their customs did
>>
>>33253122
are you chinese or japanese?
>>
>>33253129
It can either be seen as they were all the last samurai (plural) in that village, or Matsumoto was the last samurai. The title is not in reference to the last character alive at the end of the film you idiot.
>>
>>33253129

Watanbe's character embodied the end of the samurai era, Cruise was merely an observer to it.
>>
>>33252804

I can't remember if Tom Cruise was an actual certified Samurai after his stay (I doubt it) or if he just got to learn their ways a bit and be a guest of honor at the final battle. But there was no literal "Last Samurai". Obviously there would be a few stragglers scattered throughout Japan who were still Samurai, and so it's unlikely Tom Cruise would outlive every single one until he was the actual last samurai.

The point was that the Last Samurai was an honorary title that Ken Watanabe's character earned, because he led the last wave of resistance and died in battle. Compare it to the title "Last of the Romans" which has been applied to Aetius and Belisarius, neither of which came close to being the actual last of their kind.

Then there's the possibility that the Last Samurai is meant to be interpreted as plural, which means it was applicable to the entire group.
>>
>>33253122
Nips love this movie.
>>
>>33253274
>Ronin
>>
>>33253078

Other people have pointed out why you're an idiot, but the whole reason he lived is that they wanted all the others to die but they were willing to pick him up and treat his wounds, because he was a westerner and the bad guys had hard-ons for westerners.
>>
>>33252775
how in the fuck do people even arrive at that conclusion

he was the last one alive. Every one else died in the final battle.

>>

when he fought for and earned his sword, he was taken into the samurai brotherhood. You are never allowed in, you fight your way in. Just like Batiatus's ludus in Spartacus.
>>
>>33253417
He wasn't samurai though. also samurai is plural. it was a story about the last samurai.
>>
>>33253378

>film is called Last Samurai
>has Cruise on all the posters dressed as a samurai

That's why.

I might be wrong but I assume the marketing was different in Japan. I imagine the posters would all be like OP's pic, where Ken Watanabe is standing next to Tom Cruise and all the Japs would assume he was the actual last samurai and Tom Cruise was just the observer character meant to give the western audience a protaganist they can understand and see through the eyes of.

Either way, everything ranging from the film's name to the posters are all handled by a different department than the actual artists. The film itself is just about an American who witnesses a bunch of samurai die and he fails to make an actual impact on the overall course of events.
>>
>>33253520
>using Spartacus as anything
>>
>>33253492

It wouldn't be a stereotype if there wasn't at least some statistical significance.
>>
Contrary to popular conception, the title of the film does not refer to Nathan Algren as the Last Samurai. The word "Samurai" here is in its plural form and is actually referring to Katsumoto's clan as a whole.
>>
>>33253078
>It's real good.

Fucking Great. I can watch it again and again. Cruise is great, Watanabe is great, Zimmer is great, the village itself is great. And yes, the last samurai is Watanabe because he died on the battlefield like a samurai should. Still waiting for Zwick to make another film as good as it.
>>
would you say it's comparable to something like... lets say, Gladiator or Master and Commander
>>
>>33253566
If all you did was look at the poster you might get that impression, but if you had actually watched the film and had an iota of intelligence in your brain then you could work out otherwise.

If Tom Cruise was an actual samurai he would've kept fighting, committed seppuku, or something. But he wasn't. At the end of the film it was very clear that he was still "the American" and he just retired to being an unknown farmer so he could continue destroying that pussy.
>>

I really don't think Zwick can outdo it considering the rest of his films.
