Not a true calvin and hobbes movie, not interested.

Is Bill Watterson even alive anymore? He vanished off the face of the earth 18 years go.
>>
>>33823542

Really? Of all threads to try and troll you chose this one?

>>33823560

He died in a sledding accident.

Does anyone even know what Bill Waterson looks like? The man's a hermit and I've never seen a legit photo of him.

Didn't he say he wants nothing to do with movies/TV shows/monetary adaptations of the comic?

all the frat boy calvin shirts you see are custom made shit.

I really dont care to hear how many shitty shirts Seth Green made of Calvin.

He never wanted his work commercialized. No plushies, no animated adaptation, no T-shirts, no gift cards, no nothing. Obviously his syndicate wanted all that money so he had to fight with it constantly for control of his work.

Doesn't matter. When a customer buys the initial copy of a book, they can do whatever they want with it afterward.

If he's dumb he'll leave them to his family, who will almost certainly be overcome with greed.

The Far Side was always the better comic.
>>
In his 1990 speech to Kenyon College graduates, Watterson revealed that during his last year he had painted Michelangelo's Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel on the ceiling of his dorm room:

“By standing on a chair, I could reach the ceiling, and I taped off a section, made a grid, and started to copy the picture from my art history book. Working with your arm over your head is hard work, so a few of my more ingenious friends rigged up a scaffold for me by stacking two chairs on my bed, and laying the table from the hall lounge across the chairs and over to the top of my closet. By climbing up onto my bed and up the chairs, I could hoist myself onto the table, and lie in relative comfort two feet under my painting. My roommate would then hand up my paints, and I could work for several hours at a stretch.

The picture took me months to do, and in fact, I didn't finish the work until very near the end of the school year. I wasn't much of a painter then, but what the work lacked in color sense and technical flourish, it gained in the incongruity of having a High Renaissance masterpiece in a college dorm that had the unmistakable odor of old beer cans and older laundry.”

I read a book called Finding Calvin & Hobbes recently about a dude trying to get an interview with Bill Watterson. He's beyond reclusive, its like he pretends he has nothing to do with C&H.

Its a good read.
>>
>>33824142
There's no comparison though. One is high weirdness with occasional moments of brilliant insight, the other is the perfect depiction of a kid with a wild imagination and sense of adventure. They aren't even remotely similar.
>>
>>33823560
well....it involved a red wagon...

>>
>>33823639
god damn, every time i re-read these, they get more genius.
I swear Hobbes was aware he was in a comic strip.
>>
>>33824203
One was a brilliant work of wit and irony and the other was a comic about a kid with an overly active imagination.

The Far Side was a thinking man's comic.
>>
>>33824086
i love how by the time you get to the end of the strip, there was enough great content that a punchline isn't even necessary. but it's there anyway and it's hilarious.
>>
>>33824154

His Kenyon speech is one of the best speeches I have ever read. It was absolutely incredible.

Watterson's comic wasn't successful because it was well-drawn. There are lots of well drawn comics

it was successful because watterson is a genius
>>
>>33824191
I read that too.

I respect Bill for distancing himself from his creation so it can be enjoyed without any unnecessary outside distraction. We know he worked hard on the comic for years and that's all we really need to know.
>>
>>33824283
Both are more cerebral than say Cathy or Marmaduke but stop being a turd about it. The Farside was often just weird for the sake of being weird and little more.

hey guise!!!

imagine just for a second!

watterson kept making calvin strips but he just didn't print them anymore
>>
>>33824283
But look at the way Watterson fucked with the format, the way he divides his panels in his later Sunday strips for example. It's definitely one of the greats.
