How could one show be so good, and then become so bad?

Also Simpsons thread. Post your favourite lines, episodes, pictures, anything. Call each other plebs for having bad taste.

What a dumb fuck question, writers changed and they ran out of material.
>>
I think the same could be said about family guy

fans became writers and these fans are pretty fucking stupid

They started to REALLY REALLY REALLY suck after the Movie
I remember they had a little "second wind" after the movie, but then the show literally went to lowest bottom of hell

Yeah, yeah, we get it... You love old Simpsons and hate the new ones. Fuck Groening, yeah, yeah... Cancel the Simpsons already, yada, yada, yada...

Thank you making this extremely original thread.

This show isn't bad; it never got worse. You just became more disillusioned in life and find it more difficult to laugh and have fun.

Yeah, they've been rehashing their own stories for years. You're up to date on topics you discuss, right?
>>
>>33956057 (OP)
All the good writers from the earlier seasons left the show.

That is the for serious answer. Some of the old crew are still around but if you look up any fan favourite episodes the guys who wrote them don't work there any more, haven't in a decade.
>>
>>33956280

I'm saying that as a fictional show, they have limitless material as they can make up whatever the fuck they want.

But yes, the writers suck and haven't been creative in years.

I feel like everything good and or funny about the Simpsons was transferred to Futurama(yes they are completely different shows)

I grew up watching the Simpsons. Either it was me growing out of a level of humor that is probably still there or the show just straight up losing it's touch due to the writers or whoever running out of or rehashing old ideas.

I'm not bashing the show in any way, but I honestly cannot watch an episode these days without cringing.

>The Simpsons return to New York City after Bart discovers that, out of all of the female interests he has had (such as Gina the juvenile delinquent, Jenny the nursing home volunteer, Darcy the pregnant teen, and Nikki, the fourth grade girl who flip-flopped between loving and hating him), the only one who liked him was Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel's daughter, Mary (from "Apocalypse Cow"), and now that Mary's made it to the Big Apple to be a writer for Saturday Night Live, Bart wants to see her again.
Guest stars: Ken Burns, Zooey Deschanel, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Anne Hathaway, Maurice LaMarche, Don Pardo, Natalie Portman, Kevin Michael Richardson, Al Roker and Sarah Silverman

I watched this show almost every day when I was a kid. Probably my favorite TV show of all time. I also love Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, and South Park, but I wouldn't go as far as to call them favorites. Remember the movie? Wasn't it nice to see a comedy that wasn't completely retarded? What the hell happened to The Simpsons? The new episodes are fuckin' awful. The show now is like nothing what it used to be. The characters, Homer, Marge, Bart, etc. act/talk nothing like they did from the old episodes. There are literally no jokes at all; it's like a cartoon soap opera now instead of a comedy. I know I probably should find something better to do instead of just fixating on it but I just can't believe how bad the new episodes are compared to the old ones.

Besides the terrible animation, bad jokes and even worse execution present in the newer episodes, one thing I really hate is the structure of the episodes.
It's always, without fail
A plotline
B plotline
Now, don't get me wrong, a lot of the classic episodes feature two plotlines. However, most of the time the storylines either both spawn from the same point, interact with eachother or are thematically similar so compliment eachother in telling the story. I'll give you some random examples.
Bart Vs. Australia - Lisa and Marge's b plot line of exploring Australian culture further help aid the alienation that Homer and Bart feel by just how different things are.
Stark Raving Dad - Everyone concentrating on Homer being declared insane compliments Lisa's b-plot line dealing with her feelings of being ignored regarding being the middle child. (same goes with Lost Our Lisa)
$pringfield - Mr Burn's turning into Howard Hughes, Homer working at the casino and becoming full-time guardians of the kids and Marge developing a gambling problem are all directly related to eachother.

Of course there are plenty of examples of absolutely no B story line (most eps) and there are some eps where the storylines aren't really related (Last Temptation of Homer, Team Homer) - however, if you look at the new episodes, there's a very obvious formula in place. The fact that show is now workshopped by entire teams to come up with plots... and then they all suggest jokes and decide which ones are funny enough to make the cut leads to a lack of originality or the daring that made the show a cornerstone of western culture. I think one of the first episodes where I can pinpoint something being really, really wrong is the Superbowl episode. Homer's storyline with his friends leaving for the Superbowl is the reason Marge and Lisa are alone, sure, but their plotline has no thematic connection and could be crammed in to just about any other episode. The plot line is extremely meandering and has no focus (in my opinion another way for the writers simply to skip from joke to joke, so the context has to be wildly changed, which in my opinion is another huge fault of the show and makes it far less enjoyable than the condensed simplistic charm of the older episodes) and falls apart in the third act. Sprinkle with some meta humour, a really bad joke about Fox=bad and a b-story that had absolutely no baring on anything and you've got modern Simpsons. Don't get me wrong, the episode was OKAY, but personally I consider it a far more grievous shark jump than The Principal and the Pauper.

I remember the first time I properly noticed the way episodes are set up was the one where Lisa sees the creatures from Where the Wild Things Are (yet another 'Lisa feels unloved' episode, too)
I was just idly watching it on channel 4, and when the plot jumped from 'stamp museum' to 'now the Simpsons live next to a graveyard' I suddenly realised how jarring it is. I can't remember the last time the first seven minutes of an episode didn't horrifically contrast the rest of it.
You know the way South Park mocked Family Guy's cutaway gags with the manatee tank? I almost think you could do the same thing, with the 'episode intro' and 'episode plot'
>The family are going to a flea market so Homer can find a CD by a band he loved
...leads to...
>Bart gets abducted by aliens, and Lisa learns the clarinet!
