PTA on Christopher "Hack" Nolan:

>You look at what Christopher Nolan did with Batman, that’s like the meeting of the highest level of artistic skill & a kind of commerciality and appeal to a wide range of people which is what anybody would want. It’s kind of unparalleled actually

MY SIDES
>>
he's right, there is no one in film industry right now with such power and creative independence as nolan, last director like that was hitchcock
>>
He's right though. Nolan made quality filmmaking appealing to the masses.

I feel embarrassed for OP. PTA is right.

Sure, Nolan isn't the deepest person around, far from it. But he does manage to put more thought into his films than anyone in blockbuster action films at the moment.

The reason people hate on him on here (Personally I'm kind of a fanboy), is because he's overrated. Being overrated doesn't make someone bad though.

And he really does have a lot of power. WB worship the guy. He's brought them so much money, in so little time.
>>
Well yeah, he's right. Nolan makes popcorn "turn your brain off" drama, which is perfectly fine until idiots start comparing his movies to legitimately intelligent movies.

I actually think Batman Begins was fairly unremarkable, it was well done, but nothing ground-breaking or overly artistic about it. It didn't really do anything for blockbuster superhero films that Spiderman or X-Men had done before it.

The Dark Knight, however, is an example of a top-tier amalgamation of cinematic brilliance and blockbuster mass-market appeal. It's a shame TDKR tarnished what could have been a relatively flawless trilogy.

Not exactly; au contraire, I believe it makes the film more enjoyable, as you pick up on very many nuances and quirks that add an extra layer of depth many can easily miss.

For a film such as Moonrise Kingdom, especially, it helps to analyze such things, as Wes Anderson is known for being a meticulous filmmaker, down to the wood panel, color scheme, or simple hue.
>>
>>29864102
You just don't know shit about cinema. You think you do, but you don't. You know what your problem is? You think your taste is definitive. Well, it's not. I've got a brother in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences motherfucker. My grandfather ran a movie theater during the fucking second world war. I've forgotten more better movies than you've ever fucking seen. So maybe you should stick to your Disney Channel whore threads and discussions of shit TV and leave the cineastes in peace you fucking toddler. Take your ignorant ass where it belongs when I want to talk about talented filmmakers changing the face of cinema as we know it and bridging the gap between low and high art in commercially successful endeavors. I am sorry but Quentin is a man who lives and breathes his own cinema, hes self indulgent and bordering on the line of becoming a self parody.

He's saying Nolan is giving up artistic value for commerciality, which isn't really much of a compliment when you look at it. Especially when PTA himself doesn't care much about reaching wide audience and instead makes films for autonomous reasons. You can admire a film for making tons of money and still being somewhat respectable of a movie, but when it comes down to it you're detracting artistic quality. You can do both — I could name a few — but those movies don't make as much as Nolan blockbusters one would assume. Still, Nolan does alright at film-making regardless of commercial intent.

>10/10 movie all the oscars and money
'cept that isn't true. Nolan's gotten nothing from the Oscars for his films. His best films (in terms of the Oscars), The Dark Knight and Inception, I believe only won best stuff like best sound editing.

PTA has the big nominations for his films, and DDL managed to get best actor for his role in TWBB.

it was well done, dont get me wrong, but it seemed like it was out of his wheelhouse. no high concept, no sub narrative, it just wasnt what i expected for his final movie

>Calling someone a plebeian for NOT mentioning Heath Ledger
Nigga, Ledger is the most plebeian actor to ever win an oscar. Even on the night there were shrugs all around and Nolan himself even had a guilty look in his eye. It was understood by all to just be a sympathy prize for dying. Now he's on Halloween masks and tumblr blogs. What a legacy. Hack.

You're a pasty mouth-breather living in his parents' basement. Don't use that word.

only try-hards say that heat wasnt electrifying in that movie. and anyways, the oscar was probably more of an apology for not giving it to him for his gay sex cowboy movie than anything

I'm not sure which is his objective best, but my favorite is Paths of Glory. Beautifully made and it kicks you right in the feels.

hence the guilt for snubbing him. but i thought he was pretty good. i was actually pretty choked up during that scene when he went back to gyllenhaals parents house. hes cursed forever with unfulfilled love because he couldnt accept himself. and now hes dead

Everyone in Hollywood knows each other. Nolan has a lot of influence, PTA is smart to be sycophantic here. Tell the truth wouldn't do him any good. People aren't going to stop being plebs just because he trashes one of Nolan's films. It won't make himself any more popular nor will it make Nolan any less popular, it might do the opposite in fact.

These comments are meaningless. People who have a lot to lose can't afford to tell the truth. Remember, free is just another word for nothing to lose.

Image if PTA has said the opposite; Nolan is a shallow hack, his films are overrated, TDN was a one trick pony with Ledger's performance; there'd be a lot of bad press and controversy and brouhaha over nothing, it would make things really awkward between PTA and Nolan and lots of people at the Hollywood parties and award ceremonies and director roundtables. PTA is autistic in the banal sense of the term, he can't handle all that pressure and reporters asking him to explain his comment or people coming up at parties and asking him to explain himself. Look at the fugly mestizo he married. He has no game, he's probably more socially awkward than half of /tv/. Just watch this fucking interview. Look at this kid .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHQ44-0535w

It's just basic etiquette, nothing more. PTA's aesthetic is totally different from Nolan's, his comment is 100% BS.
