Are you still purchasing movies on DVD or have you started building up your Bluray collection?
>>
>tfw blu-ray remastering of old movies ruins the charm and feel of the grainy picture quality.

going entirely digital with my collection
>>
the new one looks like someone opened photoshop and put the smoothing tool on cruise control

there's no way that's what it looked like straight from the film negatives
>>
if they look like that picture on the right, i never will again

its film not video games, the artifacts are necessary

why does arnie look glazed in vaseline in the new transfer? i prefer the old one.

Only crap transfers with too much DNR do this.

It's really only noticeable in a few scenes. The rest of the movie in the new transfer looks amazing.

Holy shit. I can't decide if that would be really cool or try-hard hipsterism.
>>
>>29243943
How are you managing to do that?

Just pirating everything, or actually converting your media with a dvd converter or something?

I feel like until there's a service like Steam for movies, having a wholly "digital" collection isn't even worth bothering with.

Unless, again, you give zero shits and just pirate everything.

my blu collection is about double what my dvd was, though I always research a transfer before upgrading, OP's pic related, I still have the 15th anniversary edition of Predator on dvd. But some older films have great transfers. Casablanca, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Lawrence of Arabia come to mind. All have amazing detail and still retain the film grain

>pic is my collection as of Dec (minus dvds)
>>
I download 720p unless it's a movie I really like.
>>
>>29244087
Not him but I have about 4TB of movies that I ripped from Netflix and the library straight to ISO images. Stuff on Bluray I just download transparent encodes or Remux depending on the movie.
>>
i stopped buying dvds a few years ago.
i'm probably gonna shoot myself when 4k blu-rays will come out and i'll have to buy everything again
>>
Building a Blu-Ray collection, although I am still going to buy DVD's because some movies(Arnold movies to be specific) are only available in that format.

Here is my collection. Started in 2007 I believe. Spent an average of $7 for several years on them, now they are cheaper obviously.

I think I have around 1000 or so, and most of the shelves are double layered as you can see. I have a pretty big HD-DVD collection too, with about 98% of the NA releases ever. Spent very little on them too.
>>
I stopped collecting entirely after I lost roughly $4k worth of dvds when moving.

I have a much smaller collection now, but the rest I pirate.

I'm going to laugh at all the idiots that bought HD Bluray collections just like I'm laughing all the idiots now that bought those shitty SD DVD collections when we all have full AR with no bar 4k+ movies available on cinema size screens. We will wonder how we were even able to watch that shitty 1080p quality.
>>
Don't even bother watching stuff on DVDs anymore unless I am sure as fuck it won't get a Bluray transfer down the line.
>>
>>29243877 (OP)
can anyone tell me the difference between a blueray and a 720p or 1080p movie file i download from TPB?!!

Been wondering a long time.
does it all depend on the screen you watching it on? the player? some software idk about?
>>

How long until Blurays are replaced? 7 or so years?

I have to imagine that 4k stuff will be the last physical format.

maybe when youre 15 i'll tell you
>>
>>29244420
so if I play a movie I bought from the store as a Bluray disc on a 720p tv screen and play a movie I downloaded from TPB thats 720p they will look the same?!
>>
is 4k actually coming? whats the point of having res that high? it will just hurt our eyes and all the actors will look ugly no matter what. srsly it will be far too clear.
>>
Why is there no Dolby true HD rips of movies, only shitty DD and DTS?
>>
>>29244403
It's a placebo. Same thing with video games and the whole 30 vs 60 FPS business.

It's all to get more cash out of your pocket.

Some films have been scanned in 8K. You're forgetting film grain
>>
>>29244432
Physical formats are already dead so even less. This years CES was all about 4k and everyone is beginning their launch of 4k distribution services. It'll be a couple more years maybe before they get some standard out for a physical medium but 4k is almost already here.

blu-rays are normally 1080p but with little compression so there's little artifacting or pixellation. The movie files from pirate bay are the blu-ray movie file compressed to a reasonable file size. Normally, unless it's YIFY, the quality on TPB movie files is so good it's hard to tell much of a difference. Go for .MKV files
>>
I buy DVDs in the bargain bin or if I really want a movie and bluray isn't available.

But I always get bluray if I can.

To be honest, unless the picture is Begotten-tier, it doesn't ruin my experience.

THE ULTIMATE HUNTER EDITION OF PREDATOR LOOKS 10 TIMES BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL RELEASE

COME AT ME FAGGOTS. THAT AIRBRUSHED LOOK IS ONLY PRESENT IN 2 SCENES THAT LASTS ALL OF 90 SECONDS
>>
>>29244030
>filtering them heavily to make them look like vhs tapes
Is there a filter that actually does this? I've been looking around for one and there doesn't seem to be. I'm sure it's not impossible. Nestopia has a pretty authentic looking NTSC filter that replicates the look of using composite cables pretty well. Maybe even just something like that would be cool even if it didn't replicate VHS artifacts.
>>
>>29244511
What medium are they being distributed in? Are most of them still disc based?
I think 'next-gen' might be the one I start buying movies.

I know I could just google this, but eh.

They will all be net based and connected to things like Smart TVs or Rokus.

That remastering looks a little "off" to me (it's more an issue with the saturation than anything else) but I like where it's coming from. I love the grainless clarity and color depth of digital filming so I definitely approve of remasters that try to replicate that.

i seriously hope you guys watch the movie before buying the blu-ray.

grunts that work at retail establishments, who's movie sales are down and can't afford to pay as many workers or give them good hours.

Care to explain why you think this? It's not unheard of for feature films to have been shot in 1080p. If that resolution adequate for it to be blown up to an image ~20ft across at you local cinema, what makes you think you'll be taking full advantage of your 4K screen unless your sitting uncomfortably close to it?
>>
>>29244993
You won't get the advantages of the screen. If it was shot in 4k you would. This isn't rocket science.
