I used to hate Lost. I tried watching it back when it was on TV during season 1, and I could not get into it. I was 15 at the time, and I didn't really find the appeal. It seemed really boring to me.

I tried to give it another shot a couple of weeks ago, and I've finished watching the whole series.

And let me just say that this has been one of the best television experiences of my life.

Maybe it's because I'm older now and I can appreciate all the little details, symbolism, themes and other literary techniques used throughout the show, but all I can say is that it has pretty much ruined watching television for me.

Everything is just sub par in comparison to what I just watched. I'm very serious. And I used to be a Lost hater too since I was always annoyed by all the threads and I always had a negative view of it from when I watched it the first time.

I'm glad I gave it a shot. What a ride it has been. I envy those of you who have watched it since the beginning and have been engulfed in Lost mysteries for this long. I kinda wish I had more breaks in between the cliffhangers and stuff. It would've really made the experience crazier and more nerve-racking.

So yeah, that's my Lost noobie story. Thank you for finally getting me into this show.

And BTW I loved the ending. One of the most beautiful, emotionally powerful, and well structured endings I have seen in a while.

I will be buying the DVDs and putting them on my DVD shelf which is devoid of ANY tv show DVDs. This will be my first. And boy will I be glad I bought them. I'll be re watching this series many times.

That's a tough question...I really like all the seasons.
    But here's a try:

    1>6>4>2>3>5

Nothing against season 5. Like I said, they are all magnificent seasons. 3 would have been higher if it didn't start off kind of slow at the beginning. Thank god it picked up its pace around the middle and didn't stop.

One of the things I really liked about this show is how it gives you so many easily overlooked hints and foreshadowing elements. Lots and lots of easter eggs that you think about a couple of episodes or even seasons later and you say "OH YEAAHHH HOLY CRAP IT MAKES SENSE NOW". I really loved those moments throughout the show.

True facts. The pacing at the end of season three is nothing short of phenomenal, combine that with the quality of the last six of seven episodes and it's flawless. I didn't get that feeling from the end of season six. I wish the last few episodes of the series had that kind of pacing and exhilarating suspense.

Flash-sideways was a momentum killer. Not to mention the failed opportunities to expand upon mysteries previously introduced. I'm not asking for charts and graphs about everything but I can't be alone in thinking ten minutes of some stuff about the ash circles or whatever is better than ten minutes with Jack deciding if he wants to operate on Locke or not.

    (OP here)

I enjoyed the last couple episodes of season 6. It really makes you feel like you are seeing/experiencing the grander scheme of things on the island.

Sure it's a little slower paced than the last crazy intense and thrilling season 3 episodes, but it gives you one of those feelings where you feel like what you've been watching and seeing so far has amounted to SOMETHING.

Honestly, I felt like Charlie in season 1 saying, "Guys...Where are we" all over again. I just felt this awe-inspiring and jaw dropping feeling as I watched the last couple of episodes of season 6. It was really similar to the feeling when I watched season 1 where I felt like I was placed into place MUCH bigger than me both physically and metaphysically. And I really liked how all the storylines and concepts of the show weaved together at the end. But hey, that's just like my opinion, man.

Oh and in case anyone is wondering, I am an agnostic atheist.

I know there's a lot of hooplah about the ending being a lot more spiritual and faith-driven, but I think that's why it worked so well for me.
Not only did it manage to give closure to all the characters, but it really balanced out the the science vs faith theme throughout the show. It just felt RIGHT for me.

I say Agnostic Atheist on 4chan because Atheists always go crazy and start yelling and spazzing about vocabulary and the correct terminology and they end up derailing the whole initial debate.

Well, they might not have an idea as to what it ACTUALLY implies....but I think they know what they are TRYING to say.

They know that when they say "Agnostic" it implies the "Agnostic Atheism" belief. And when they say "Atheist" they are internally referring to the "Gnostic Atheist" group.

They may not know the proper terminology, but they know what they mean.

It's just a hassle to have to type Agnostic Atheist everytime, when you can just say Agnostic.

I absolutely hated the Jacob/MiB episode. It could have been fucking outstanding and instead it was just mediocre at best. They should have just gone that route about the game between the two of them since it was implied all over the place but it was barely touched upon and instead dealt with the light tunnel and their childhoods. Also, Allison Janey can't act her way out of a paper bag.

Oh I definitely agree that the mother was kind of a bad actress. Her latin was really sloppy at the beginning (I know, kinda shitty criticism for her acting, but I've studied Latin so I kinda picked up on it).

But the children were pretty OK for me.

I don't really expect good acting when it comes to child actors, and I think they did the best they could with their roles.

Luckily Titus and Mark came in half way into the episode and kicked ass.

Oh and I too expected the episode to be about answers and getting to know the details of the game and what not, but I ended up being intrigued by the whole veiled and vague approach they took to it.

It wasn't what I had expected, and it wasn't BETTER than what I expected, it was just really DIFFERENT from what I expected. And I guess that's why that episode stuck with me.

It's definitely not the best episode in the series, but I'd definitely say it was a good episode.

I actually discovered the Lost Pilot on the myspace hulu player last year.

The next weekend I watched every single episode of it until the end of season 5.

I'm GLAD I discovered it this late.

If I would have watched it from when it first came out, I would have forgotten all the little details.

I'd have to go with Deus Ex Machina.

That episode was just superb. And it ended perfectly with the light from the hatch turning on.

It was just such a powerful and captivating scene.

And the whole thing about Boone dying was really hard for me. He was the first Lostie that we loved that died.

It made me realize that not all of them were safe, and that shit was gunna get serious, real soon.

But the episode was the best mostly because of the hatch-light ending. Beautiful.

Oh and a VERY VERY close tie to Deus Ex Machina is The Moth (also from season 1).

It wasn't my favorite episode for a while. But by the time I got to season 5ish, I started thinking about Locke's speech to Charlie. About struggle. And how it shapes us into beautiful things.

I really liked how it resonated with the rest of the characters and what was going on in the show.

Season 1 was great, but it didn't have too many plot-progressive REALLY GOOD episodes like the rest of the season. But when season 1 DID have a REALLY GOOD episode, it was REALLY REALLY FUCKING GOOD. God-like stuff.

The rest of the seasons had an even displacement of general awesomeness throughout the episodes.

I agree that Lost has had it's share of bad episodes (I'm looking at you Stranger in a Strange Land) but I honestly think Season 6 was great. It really managed to wrap everything up nicely and managed to be emotionally engaging throughout. It was one whole season of plot-progression, with no stopping. I guess the pacing was a lot quicker and less nuanced than the rest of the seasons, but that's expected from a final season. Things will have to speed up and get to a resolution faster.

I like to think of season 6 as the more action oriented season.

I have seen Battlestar Galactica and I've watched a bit of The Wire.

I'm not much of a crime/drama fan so I didn't really get into The Wire, but I keep hearing good stuff about it from tv, so I'll give it another chance.

Hey, if I gave Lost another chance, I should give The Wire another chance too right?

btw BSG was awesome and I loved it as well, but I would say Lost is the better show

    You should fix it again.

Most of the mysteries on the island are explained, or CAN be explained with all the shit we've been told about and all the little clues and hints throughout the show. Some of the bigger mysteries involving the island though, won't be answered fully. And I think that's a good thing, since those same mysteries are really tied in to the themes of the show. I say they need to be more enigmatic and harder to describe than the rest, since the show really is about a very weird and paranormal place.

I mean, from the start of the show your realize you're in some deep shit when it comes to mysteries.

Yeah I watched the first two seasons of Prison Break and then I stopped around the middle of the third season.

It just seemed kinda ridiculous around season 3 when you realize this show is called Prison Break, and these guys just keep getting back into prison. I was like, boy do these guys really suck at escaping.

But I still liked seasons 1 and 2. Both were really suspenseful and thrilling. I wish it kept that quality throughout the rest of the seasons though.

    - Firefly if you haven't seen it. Buy the series on DVD and the movie (Serenity).

    - Season one of Heroes is good.

    - Star Trek: The Next Generation is phenomenal.

    - 24 is good, although it gets very formulaic and repetitive.

    - Fringe is decent too.
    >> Anonymous 05/27/10(Thu)08:53 No.9582763
    >>9582665
There are plenty of very decent shows (in addition to Prison Break):
    Breaking Bad
    Battlestar Galactica
    Twin Peaks
    Firefly
    Dark Angel
    The Shield
    Veronica Mars

But for me the only one that really compares to Lost is The X Files. If you have amazing amounts of patience and love for things that build up very slowly in exquisite detail, which I'm guessing you do, then you should definitely watch it. All at once of course for maximum effect You will need a few weeks of uninterrupted free time, though, but it's completely worth it.

Wow thanks for all the recommendations guys.

So now my list of tv shows to watch this summer in lieu of Lost will be:

    1. The Wire
    2. The Sopranos
    3. Firefly
    4. Twin Peaks
    5. X-Files (i used to watch it on and off when I was a kid, but I should give it another go)

The rest of the recommendations you guys gave me, I've seen before, so don't feel bad that I didn't put it on my list :).

The problem is that now with Lost being do goddamn acclaimed, it's really hard (read:impossible) to create a show better than it. If a future show has a lot of mysteries and other Lost-esque features, people will just go "Oh look, another show trying to be like lost." This is what saddens me.

And of course, no more Locke/Desmond/Lapidus. :'(

There will still be good stuff, it's not like Lost wasn't built off other shows that came before it either. Every show is a remake of a remake, and sometimes they do it better than before.

I think we'll have something in the future. Never underestimate the creativity and ingeniousness of the future.

Maybe something along the lines of Lost in Space.

    Get it?

    LOST

    in space?
They crash land on a mysterious planet full of polar bears, hatches, and smoke.

I dunno. But I bet they can make something really cool in the future. Lost just started the phenomenon.

You know what I like comparing Lost to?

    The Half Life series.

It's got the really ominous and mysterious vibe to it, where you have absolutely no idea what's going on, and you're just going through the motions of everything, not getting any serious answers to the big questions even when you want to. But you see major events unfold that give you hints and glimpses of the bigger truth.

I think that's why Valve is a fan of Lost as well. Cuz they realized they both have the same formula.

They know how to hook you with the really grand and incredibly intriguing mysteries.

Plus I used to think Christian Shepherd standing out in the water looking at Jack early in Season 1 looked a lot like G-man with his briefcase.

I always liked to think Christian Shepherd was the G-man, even though it made absolutely no sense.

Started on LOST just before the final season started.. marathoned the hell out of the 5 seasons so I could watch the 6 premiere on television.

Anyway, on a similar sort of story I'm working my way to catch up with Supernatural right now. I'm only in the midst of season 2 and I'm already hooked.. I'd recommend checking that show out. Although, let me say season 1 is very meh. Quite frankly, I would just advise watching the first and last episodes of season 1 and than moving straight onto season 2.

Although if you do decide to go through all of season 1 of Supernatural just persevere and know that the show DOES get better. Good god, does it get so much better.
