Colin Baker played the Doctor during the worst produced worst written era of any show ever on television. He also played the Doctor as a dick. He was supposed to be unstable and mellow out over his 2nd season, but it was never made because the ratings were so low they took a year off.

I'm ok with OP's list. Although I haven't had the time to watch Pertwee I'll take his word for it.

Colin Baker actually played a pretty decent Doctor, but the writing staff raped him into oblivion.

It was an utterly stupid regeneration dude, it's as if Davies completely forgot the basics of Doctor Who.

When the Doctor regenerates he regenerates, that's it. For the Doctor it's like pulling off a band-aid. He doesn't start sobbing "I DON'T WANNA GO!", no sad bullshit goodbyes. Tennant acted like the Doctor was really dieing, visiting his friends for the last time, and that doesn't make a lick of sense.

Time of Angels ending speech was weak and predictable and there wasn't much emotional drama especially considering how weak the cliffhanger was.

The rooftop scene was a little weak for me just seemed like a pale rehashing of Tennant.

I liked him at the end of Beast Below, event though it was a pretty weak episode.

He had some good emotion in his interplay with the dream lord, especially given the reveal at the end.

But damn the desperate mania of Tennant declaring himself essentially a god and then being crushed to despair and facing his mortality in the span of a few minutes was pretty amazing.

I'm not yet a fan of Smith, he seemed to young when he was first cast. But I decided to give him a bit of a chance, and I've gotta say i'm warming up to him a bit. He's done a good job of being a bit of a cranky old man despite looking very young, and there seems to be something desperate about him to avoid loneliness while still trying to keep an emotional distance in Smith. Just my opinion though.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/10(Tue)19:12 No.9538946
Troughton was forced to regenerate and there are apparently so many regenerations one can have so there is a reason to be upset. Also I don't think the Watcher was created by the Fourth Doctor.

Tennant just pissed me off because he was acting like Regeneration kills the Doctor. "I don't want to go!" Who the heck is going Doctor? You're just getting a new face.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/10(Tue)19:14 No.9538971
    >>9538896
That's one way of putting it. I would say he was great at either being really upbeat and eccentric or being really angsty and dark without usually offering much middle ground.

Whereas Smith's performance is more nuanced in the way he moves and delivers lines, and in the way he gives a more rounded portrayal in general, which personally I think comes closer to broad acting skill than Tennant in the role.

I kinda get the feeling that its one of those things like a 7 year old getting a shot, it terrifies them a bit leading up to it but after the fact its not so bad.

Regeneration could go terribly wrong, and he does change, but once he's through it its not bad and you can treat it with some levity.

I totally agree and I hate the "regeneration is dying" crap, no it's not. But then, the "I don't want to go" is really RTD and maybe Tennant himself speaking and that scene only works on a meta level as them and the related cast (and some crew probably) saying goodbye to their audience. Thinking of it that way, the scene was OK.

Baker gets considered the best because he's the one most old series fans started with and for years was the only one they had. Its the same with Tennant and the new series. Both of their tenures brought the most new fans to the show, and they're iconic for it. Its entirely possible to like another Doctor more, though most are always partial to their first.

Yeah, exactly. The line "You were my Doctor" makes no sense in-show. But I don't give a damn; I found that moment really touching, I teared up, and the goodbye to the fans was really touching, too.

I remember when Sylvester McCoy came onto the scene, and came across some people he met in the past and everyone was just like "oh" when he said he regenerate. The second doctor did get some surprised companions when he changed, but most doctors just came out of their regenerations without anyone really caring.

This new trend of acting like the old regeneration is dying sucks.
