Just posted this in /a/, and realized it would be more appropriate here:

Is anyone else sick of how much the Japanese idealize themselves in a lot of their mainstream films (anime and otherwise)?
e.g. I just saw the anime, "Summer Wars" on Sunday. That was basically the Japanese wanking their egos. Family unity, samurai honour, idealized Japanese shyness/politeness etc.

Basically, I'm looking for some Japanese films, anime or live-action, that aren't an excuse to glorify Japanese culture and preferably show a much more realistic side to Japan. e.g. "All About Lily Chou-chou", "Nobody Knows", "The Blue Light" etc.

All the movies about how Koreans are dysfunctional kind of kill what the Chinese are doing, though.

Compared to our TV Japan has a shit load of shows that are either western themed or just plain take place in the US/Europe.

I'm more offended by American patriotism, frankly. It's one thing to deny the shit your country has done, the social inequalities, etc, and something else entirely to be wholly ignorant of them, or embrace them as evidence your way of life is superior and anyone getting shafted must be too lazy to do anything about it.

If you've seen any Japanese stuff, you'd realize they take it to a whole new level.

Other countries don't do it to nearly the same degree.

They may be western themed, but they're usually comparing how although the western nations (US etc.) may be more politically powerful than Japan, Japan is more honourable/traditional/wankwankwank.
I want less idealized patriotism. It's really off-putting, and is driving me more and more towards Korean culture and movies.

What's wrong with countries being patriotic? Japan should be just as patriotic for their country as America is for itself. I think they all should. Unfortunately, there are some places obviously filled with too much self hatred to love where they are from.

I don't see a problem with that. I love Korean films more and more with each new one I see. There are not a lot of Japanese films I really like. Their culture is nice; but their stories are not as interesting.

I don't really like anime. I couldn't make it through Grave of the Fireflies, Akira, Spirited Away or Paprika. I watched 5 centimeters per second a few days ago and that was just...meh. This was decent though.

At least the Japanese have like a 6% higher IQ and a 10 year longer lifespan.

Go watch Kikujiro. It basically makes fun of "normal" Japanese people and idolizes the outcasts of Japanese society.

Re-read what I wrote. I didn't say anything about patriotism in general. The Japanese pretend everything is fine, though they know it isn't. They pretend nothing bad every happened, though they know it did. Americans, on the other hand, genuinely don't seem to know what they've done or how bad some people have it, and plenty who do blame their victims for it.

Some places could use a bit more patriotism, and some places could use a lot less.

Read my post again. If you honestly didn't notice the whole glorification of Japanese cultural values, samurai honour, ancestry obssession, idealized shyness etc. than I guess it's just something that's extremely subtle unless you're used to seeing the themes, which I presume I am by now...
    >> Anonymous 03/23/10(Tue)18:46 No.7937223
But it was a warrior family...I don't think they were applying it to all Japanese people. When the uncle is talking about that battle of 2000 vs 7000 or whatever.

OP here, although I don't agree with/understand the idea of patriotism at all, I can see where you're coming from. I think you've summed up the differences between the Japanese and American self-image very well.
However, I still think the Japanese look at their own culture as though it's the Hollywood movies that are made about them (Last Samurai, Memoirs of a Geisha etc.)
    >> Anonymous 03/23/10(Tue)18:48 No.7937267
    >>7937180
Yes, can you explain how those themes where glorified?
