All my birthdays were like OP pic, except for the cake and the balloons and the party food. One year my father was sectioned under the mental health act and I spent my birthday composing a letter to him, which he ripped up when I saw him the next week. It was my mom's birthday, and I must have been 16/17 at the time. I spent the entire day in my room because I thought she would be ok and don't mind. I was always like that anyway. When I finally got out of the room because we were going to sing happy birthday, I realized there was only me, my cousin, my dad and my dad's friend there. My dad's friend didn't know it was my mom's birthday, and he was obviously feeling awkward and said he was sorry. My mom said it was ok. There was a lot of food on the table and a gigantic cake, because my mom invited a bunch of people over, but no one came. We were singing happy birthday, but it sounded really sad because there was so few people. My dad took a few pics, which made it even worse. She looked so damn sad. She had invited all her friends and family.

When I was 15, I thought everyone in school hated me. I really did. So in my birthday I asked my parents not to go to school, and they said ok. Then a girl from my class called me and said they had bought cake and soda and were going to surprise me. I almost cried.

I went to school because she called me during classes and we celebrated anyway, but it was a lot more awkward. I was happier than I'd ever been, though.

I had been asking my mom and dad for a new firetruck toy for my eight birthday for months. The particular one I wanted was sold out everywhere, nevertheless my mom and dad kept looking.

Finally my birthday came, but before I could get on the bus to go home the principal came and took me aside. I was scared, but when he took me to his office and closed the door I knew something was very wrong.

He then told me my parents had been killed in a car accident. They were coming back from the only toy store that had the firetruck I wanted when a semi lost control and hit their car. They had died on impact.

Then the principal took out a gift wrapped box from under the desk. It was my firetruck.

not exactly a birthday story, but close enough and sad enough.

when i was a kid a friend and i (he got a lift with us) went to a (10th or 11th maybe?) birthday party, for this kinda poor kid in our class that we didn't really want to go to anyway. while we are there everyone starts throwing candy around for fun, everyone is having a great time until my friend got hit in the eye. he made the birthday kid's mum call my dad to come pick us up, and it pretty much killed this kid's party.

about 4 or 5 years later, when we're in highschool, that birthday kid was missing for a while and when he came back to school it was in a wheelchair, becuase he had leukemia. it was fucking awkward because no one knew how to talk to him or treat him and shit. we weren't close friends or anything but my friend (candy friend) suddenly dropped everything that he was doing to go chat to dying birthday kid becuase he's pretty much sitting on his own. birthday kid only really had one birthday party and he'd fucked it all up after getting hit with the candy and being a giant pussy about it. birthday kid died not long after his visit back to school.
