The District 9 story was WAY superior to AVATAR in every respect: And YES, effects must be included into this equation.

1/ District 9 was a valid reflection of modern society.
2/ District 9 wasn't ruined by trailers that "showed all".
3/ District 9 had unique weapon designs.
4/ District 9 had a more believable story arc.
5/ District 9 had a less predictable story arc.
6/ District 9 had no notable actors from Hollywood.
    7/ District 9 has a levitating pig.
8/ District 9 has realistic aliens.
    9/ District 9 was FUNNY
10/ District 9 had far better conceptual designs.
11/ District 9 had a robot suit which fired an electrical device into the brain of an evil Nigerian disabled man in a wheelchair, causing his head to expand and explode.

    Here's why AVATAR sucked ass:
    1/ AVATAR was a rip-off of Pocohontas
2/ AVATAR had no amazing designs.
3/ AVATAR's creatures were based on real ones.
4/ AVATAR was a direct rip-off of DELGO.
5/ AVATAR used known actors - bad idea.
6/ AVATAR was badly written with terrible dialogue.
7/ AVATAR was not groundbreaking... the FX were not new, the techniques were not new, the designs were not new, the story arc was not new, the 3D was not new... the ONLY thing unique to the film was a more credible motion-capture method and a high-render pixel count.
8/ Had to watch AVATAR in 3D - must sit in middle of theater for best effect. 3D glasses darkened the picture.
9/ AVATAR left me unimpressed. I slept through it a second time.
10/ James Cameron (whom I worked with on another film) is a complete, fucking, douchebag-cunt.

    >>7565277 explain to me how less predictable equals more believable.

    * Less predictable = you don't know how the story will evolve (unlike a Die Hard movie where you know the bad guys will die and the hero will prevail)

    * More believable = In the distant "James Cameron" future, where people still wear neck ties to denote characters as "corporate suits", we still have an unrealistic abuse of technology and firepower - all of which is used against amazing new lifeforms. Humans becomes super powerful, can visit the distant stars and wage intergalactic war - and yet we can't fix some poor chum's broken spinal column. Oh, hang on, we can... but it will be expensive so we'll use it as a bargaining chip to manipulate his already willing ass.

The feasibility of an Alien ship landing in downtown Johannesburg is far more likely than all of Cameron's Anti-American intergalactic, shallow-morale bullshit any day of the week.

    >1/ AVATAR was a rip-off of Pocohontas

Same plot keeps turning up because it's an archetype. People keep paying to see it because it's a good archetype.

    >2/ AVATAR had no amazing designs.

Pretty much everything in Avatar was amazingly designed.

    >3/ AVATAR's creatures were based on real ones.

    So were D9's.

    >7/ AVATAR was not groundbreaking... the FX were not new, the techniques were not new, the designs were not new, the story arc was not new, the 3D was not new... the ONLY thing unique to the film was a more credible motion-capture method and a high-render pixel count.

They stopped for months at a time just to develop the cameras and techniques to make Avatar possible. The effects were ground-breaking.

    >8/ Had to watch AVATAR in 3D - must sit in middle of theater for best effect. 3D glasses darkened the picture.

Never heard that complaint from anyone else.

    >9/ AVATAR left me unimpressed. I slept through it a second time.

Apparently the average and top film critics and the average moviegoer simply liked the movie more than you did.

    >10/ James Cameron (whom I worked with on another film) is a complete, fucking, douchebag-cunt.

In an awesome way. I hear he took a nail gun to some guys cell phone once.

D9 never explained why humans couldn't just take apart the alien weapons and bypass their genetic safeguards.

Also, I have trouble believing that aliens would be treated as shrimp niggers by any country; even if they were acting like shrimp niggers. I can see a first contact causing major UN efforts to provide them a decent habitat.

If I have to make one complaint about Avatar's 3D, it's that it was too subtle. You remember that awesome opening with the waterdrops that were RIGHT THERE? The rest of the movie seemed to downplay that, which made the 3D pretty useless, in my opinion.

I'm one of the conceptual artists at WETA who worked on AVATAR and to be perfectly honest, all the designs we were asked to produce were in fact based on existing creatures. The "dragons" of Pandora were very closely designed over the bones of certain seals and extinct Pterosaurs. There was nothing particularly new about the cameras and techniques used to make AVATAR. Perhaps someone could elaborate if they know just what was so special?

With District 9 we had free reign to make whatever we wanted. And we did. Besides, District 9 was simply a Proof Of Concept to allow us to make the Dr Grordbort movie.
