During pre-prod, Jason and I (and some of the other leads) would come down here and TOTALLY improvise ideas around the scenes in the script. Neill had his hands full so Mel filmed us and I would take the footage up to Neill to see what kind of stuff he was liking or wasn't liking. The idea was a to give us a basic idea of how the major scenes in the film would run and also work out the character dynamics. We would configure the room however we liked with all this left over office junk and use it as makeshift props.

>Checking out some of the ideas from the rehearsal footage that we shot in preparation for a scene. We used very little of the stuff we'd come up with in rehearsal and generally the scenes developed as we shot. Although it was 100% improv dialogue in the moment, I prepared as much as a I could. I jotted down ideas for scenes first thing in the morning. I also built a detailed graph that I used to plot Wikus' level of sickness, anger and general intensity during the film because we were shooting dramatically out of sequence and I wanted to get his arc right. I used numbers to rate each scene in each area - so the most anger wikus ever got in the film was a 10 and I could plot other scenes in relation to that and so on...

One of Joe's more crazy last minute contraptions - it was for the original exo suit which had a more organic design - it was my meat "helmet" that was wrapped around my head during the close ups inside the suit for the battle at the end. We shot the whole sequence in this, but then did it again with a different design.

Messing around at the end of the day... it usually took about an hour to get everything off and "cleaned up". It felt SOOOOO good to get the claw off, because on some days, the metal mech inside would be digging into my hand. Towards the end of the shoot we ran out of prosthetic applications so I actually spent the night sleeping in part of the prosthetic to save it for use the next day....
