I'm in the minority when I say no, they're boring and kinda shitty. By the end, I didn't care about any of the characters. The world that was created didn't have any sense of cohesion or genuine community, which led to a lack of tension concerning its fate. The large city didn't feel anything like a genuine metropolis which defused the battle scenes there. It was executed very well in terms of cinematography, costume and so forth, but for me those apsects pale in comparison to engaging characters and a the creation of a convincing and enveloping setting. Many of the resolutions to the plot draw very little from what has come before and so are not terribly satisfying. No, I'm really not trolling.

I got all of the books about a year ago. The Hobbit was included. I read The Hobbit first and actually enjoyed it for what it was. I started The Fellowship and it really drags on in the beginning. I've been "reading" it for about a month or two now. I'm at the part where they meet Aragorn (Stider) at the inn, and I'm almost halfway through it seems. Tolkien spends entirely too much time describing the geography and environment. He'll spend eight pages describing hills and trees. It's overkill.

Correct. Minas Tirith was the western outpost guarding the city of Osgiliath. It was a stronghold and the king's summer home, not a city. It was originally designed as a gigantic palace/castle/mausoleum/library. When Osgiliath fell ~1500 years before LotR, the king moved to Minas Tirith permanently and Osgiliath began to collapse. A lot of the population picked up and moved to Minas Tirith, so there was basically a decent-sized city living inside what was supposed to be a garrison for only a few thousand men.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated the book series. I read The Hobbit and it was great, and then I started Fellowship and jesus christ, it dragged on and on, characters were too far out there for me to connect with, 10 pages describing an average forest, funny type of english used that while easily read still had a bit of a style to it that I couldn't get into, and basically nothing happens for the first 100 pages or whatever. I had to stop once they got to the singing bear man.

    But the movies fucking rocked.

    >>5838358
Tolkien isn't convoluted. The story just moves slowly. Anyway, the books pick up after the council of Elrond but I wouldn't bother reading it if you can't make it to that point in the first place.
    >> Anonymous 11/28/09(Sat)20:59 No.5838539
    >>5838423

Well it is a bit convoluted, you have to admit it. And yeah, it moves way too slowly, and what we get when you forget how slowly it took to get there, is sub par by fantasy standards imo. I see it like this, back then this was probably an amazing world with great adventures and all that, but since then, other books and movies have taken a hint from LOTR and added onto it, so someone reading it for the first time today would be spoiled by more flashy and fantastic fantasy (me), and the story here will feel like it's from a different and slower time. I mean, even just the difference between the books and the movies is huge, not just in terms of the changes made to the story, but the way the characters speak and act, the way the world is shown to us, the way the story plays it, it's done in a much better way (again, imo).

But maybe someday I'll sit down and read the books and try to enjoy them for what they are rather than what I expected them to be after watching the films.
