How many DU'ers have a HDTV, but do not subscribe to a HD cable or satellite subscription? I'm in the same situation. I get my cable with no additional charge at the university of Maryland thanks to Comcast. But I only get some HD channels, mostly from the broadcast networks that still broadcast in SD when they don't broadcast in HD, on the same HD channel (A waste of space!). Most of my cable channels are still in HD despite of having launched HD version of the channels.

Yes, I'm in something called SD purgatory, where I have a HDTV but stuck with SD (4:3 letterbox/fullscreen) content on television.

But then I realize that even if I want to subscribe to a HD cable package for a subsidized rate, it would make any difference.

Most HD channels do not even broadcast in HD 24/7. Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS, TruTV, Bravo, ABC Family, are just a few of those channels that only have a few HD programs broadcast, the rest are in upconverted 4:3 pillarbox widescreen. The only content broadcasting in HD 24/7 are the premium movie channels, sport channels, some few channels ,and HDNet and HDNet Movies. What's the point of subscribing to a package where most of HD channels don't broadcast in real HD or widescreen all the time unless you're into sports and movies? It's a massive waste of money.

It's disgusting but and I have little choice in the matter. Do any you folks have the same problem?

Many broadcast and cable channels have been reluctant to switchover to widescreen unless they upgrade to HD. The end result is that many HD channels most of time broadcast 4x3 programing, upconverted. Disgusting isn't it?
