    So get this, /tv/.

I have literally never downloaded a movie in my life. Until last week when I downloaded the 40 Year Old Virgin. I didn't even watch it because I couldn't get the MKV file to stream to my PS3 correctly and ended up deleting it.

Today, I get a fucking copyright infringement notice from my cable internet provider.

Now, I'm not really worried about getting in trouble or whatever, but what the fuck? Did I just get REALLY unlucky or what? Because I have friends that download movies constantly and I don't think any of them have ever gotten one of these.

Or is there a trick to not getting caught that I'm not aware of? I got the torrent for the movie off of Isohunt if that makes any difference.

Okay, apparently you're not supposed to use torrents for this. I was under the mistake impression that was the way most of you got your movies. My bad. Like I said, I've never downloaded movies.

And I downloaded mkv because I wanted it in HD and that was the only file type I could find of it.

It's not that you can't. It's not recommended if you live in the US or EU (I think). If you live in some other country, then you don't have to worry. If you're in the states and want to torrent, join a private tracker (it's safer). Or you could download free from rapidshare/megaupload/megashare/etc, but visiting release blogs or warez forums. Or you could get usenet, but that implies paying for pirating.

Anyway, a letter from an ISP doesn't mean shit. Disregard it... although down the road something MIGHT happen, but probably not.

you should find everything this way. Also for new movies try sites like rlslog - in comments you'll almost always find a one-link avi on MU (so you'll have the movie as fast as your connection lets you - nothing slowing you down).

Honestly? The quality sucks, but the best way to avoid risk altogether is to find someplace streaming the movie you want. Usually I use Quicksilverscreen, but if you can't find the movie you want on there there's a ton more sites on google.

If the movie you want is too unknown to be on any of those sites, usually it's safe enough to torrent. Just check the comments.

This topic shows how legally ignorant people are herp derp I'll never get caught, if I do I'll say it was my unsecured wireless.

Here's the problem; companies often go on "Fishing Expeditions" sending claims they have no intention of pursuing to suspects in the hope they will pay a moderate sum (like £300) to avoid a lawsuit. Obviously if only a small number of people pay it recoups many lost sales.

If you do respond with an excuse they may keep hassling you in an attempt to bully you into paying. Unfortunately if you don't respond there is a small chance they may take you to court. If you have a reasonable explanation like "my wireless is unsecured" the judge will want to know why you didn't respond to the original claim thus settling the issue and avoiding wasting the court's time. The prosecution will then shit all over you suggesting -correctly- you're just making up excuses.

It really isn't difficult, you're just doing it wrong. I have shit tons of invites, but fuck am I going to invite someone straight of 4chan, where we can't speak in private.

Some trackers are open signup. They may not be the best, but once you show you know how to keep a ratio, and maybe even how to upload a torrent or two, and get your user class up to at least Power User, doors start opening.

I'd suggesting starting with a site like TheBox.bz which is a great source for British TV, has plenty of freeleech torrents to build ratio with, and a large user base. Hang out in the tracker's IRC channel, and be a bit active in the forums. Once you hit Power User or better, start sniffing around for a what.cd invite. Once you get Power User or better on what.cd you'll be able to get into more sites than you should care about.

Their are tiers of sites higher than that which require actually making friends with people. But that's all social engineering. It mostly just takes time.

    Good luck.
