    Only foreign movies.

For normal movie, considering I have no hearing problems, it's totally fucking pointless.

    dubs > subs :3
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)00:52 No.4408715
Depends on the movie or show. If I can't reliable make out the dialogue, due to accents, the speed at which it's spoken, highly technical words, etc. I'll leave 'em on. It drives everyone else I know crazy though, so I try to keep them off.
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)00:53 No.4408729
I find subtitles to be distracting. Even if I can clearly hear and understand the words, my eyes will lock onto the text.

I really only use them if the people are British.

I also had to use them all the time when I watched The Wire.

i only watch subs if its foreign, but first with dubs because i would like to see whats going on in the movie pictures first before i have to read shit on the screen.

that's odd, I do the exact opposite, mainly because most dubs suck imo, I like to be able to hear the way the original actors/actresses acted.

i agree that dubs suck, thus why i have to watch the original voices too to better understand their emotion/intent behind their words. i'd rather get what their saying and doing first than get the full emotion behind it all. movies are after all about the pictures, otherwise it would just be audio stories or books.
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)01:03 No.4408835
I don't have a problem reading subtitles and paying attention to whats on screen, but only non-english stuff.

If its in English, I have no need for them.

You fuckfaces can't even properly interpret Japanese actors. So why do you guys hate dubs? I mean yeah some of the shittier animes have bad dubs, but stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Princess Monoke have great dubs.

They are, reaction image. The first movies didn't even have sound.

There are exceptions. Very few dubs are actually good.

    Also,
    >I mean yeah some of the shittier animes have bad dubs,
    >animes

Try watching something else. Hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of foreign MOVIES don't have, and never will, have dubs.

Well, I think that was exactly his point...animated stuff is a lot easier for dubbing, I don't think anybody would really watch dubs of live action stuff :3 I mean, in that case, yes, subs are best...

Dipshit, foreign animation goes along very well with dubbing.

Movies that are actually important like Das Boot and Der Untergang don't need dubs.

I can't agree man, the sound makes such a difference. but it's one of those things you don't miss till it's gone.

let me use this example because it happened like a day ago. I saw the hurt locker in theaters and decided to download it (I'll buy it when it comes out) and started playing it on my computer, there was something missing, the movie has an awesome bass track, so I brought my laptop into the basement and watched it on my tv with my 5.1 system and it was perfect.

admittedly the sound is less important than the pictures but the sound is very important, think about a movie like 300, it's full of those epic, goosebump educing scenes but if you take out the soundtrack it just doesn't have the same power.
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)01:18 No.4408980
Not every movie, but most of them. If I watch a foreign movie, even if it's in English, a language I obviously understand. I prefer to have have subtitles it's easy to miss stuff otherwise. Besides I've grown up watching movies and TV-shows with subtitles. I dont even know that I read them. Sometimes subtitles can dissapear from a TV broadcast and I can sit there for half an hour without noticing.
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)01:22 No.4409023
You faggots do realise that subtitles butcher the original dialogue as well, right?
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)01:27 No.4409074
I definitely prefer dubs, assuming that the movie wasn't altered in any other major way in the transition. The imagery in most movies is more important than hearing the original accents IMO, and deserves full attention. Subtitles potentially distract from that, especially in quick-moving scenes.

    haha, this ^^^^^^

you seen the comparison of the original and updated LtROI subs? they're absolutely terrible, I'm glad I saw it first time with the good ones or it probably would have ruined the movie to some extent.
    >> Anonymous 08/13/09(Thu)01:30 No.4409092
    >>4409074
For live action, the original accents are way more important, considering they convey all the emotion in the scene at the time of shooting.

If you're talking about anime dubs, go to /a/
