You miss the point of classic movies. It's not about them looking like they were made last year, it's about preserving what has been done. Getting to see original 1977 special effects is part of the point of watching a classic movie. George Lucas may not have been happy with the result, because technology didn't allow for more back then, but that doesn't justify making those manipulations. It's like coloring black and white movies, nobody that cares about movies wants to watch a colored version of, say, Casablanca. And the only reason this happened to Star Wars is because Lucas made them in the first place, and it's his right to do that, just like it would be an artists right to take a great painting and change it.
