don't understand ratings. Networks aren't in charge of tracking how
many people are watching, Neilsen is. It's quite easy to see how many
people are streaming a show on Hulu or ABC.com or wherever just by
checking server logs. They aren't very reliable, of course, but it can
be done. DVRs too report viewer numbers.
The problem there is
that these numbers, besides not being reliable, represent an unreliable
audience and one that's entirely different, from a ratings stand point,
from those who watch it live.
Ratings are, and will remain,
locked to Neilsen families for the foreseeable future. Unless you have
a Neilsen box in your house, it doesn't matter if you watch it or when.
Ratings = advertising value.
DVR? Hulu? Those people aren't
watching the commercials that came with the show's live broadcast, so
they are irrelevant until DVR commercials are unskippable and the ads
they see on the site are the same as those aired live. |
