    >What happens when you put a Muslim imam, a Christian priest, a rabbi and a Buddhist monk in a room with 10 atheists?

    >Turkish television station Kanal T hopes the answer is a ratings success as it prepares to launch a gameshow where spiritual guides from the four faiths will seek to convert a group of non-believers...

The Muslim kills the Rabbi, then gets into a crusade war with the Christian. They both kill the 10 infidels.

The Buddhist Monk is probably trained to defend himself, and also doesn't get involved with the Holy War, so he's pretty much left alone.

    Buddhism is an atheist philosophy.

Buddhism and modern atheism share many points in common, ie, taking things on demonstrable facts rather than blind faith, a general disbelief in any sort of deity, and a leaning toward dispassionate, rational thought.

    That doesn't matter.

Introducing an athiest to a buddhist and expecting the one to be offended by the other is a little silly, because neither of them believe in a deity anyway.

Well, depending on the sect of buddhism atleast, but certainly not the monolithic sort of "God" in the Judeo-Christian faiths.

What's funny is that Shinto is basically just paganism, the same as found in Ancient Europe before the Roman attempts at pantheon standardization, Imperial cults and the coming of Christ.

Every little hill and grove has its own God and people worship their ancestors back for dozens of generations. It's as short sighted and primitive as religion can get - and apparently its practiced by some of the smartest people on earth.
    >> Anonymous 07/05/09(Sun)19:06 No.4084926
Not all atheists are rational calm people. Lots never leave the teenage stage of being angry at invisible things and taking it out on the people who believe in them.

    >>4084908
The nice thing about Shinto, it would seem to me, is that it doesn't require a lot of hard-core belief, even if you profess it. It just means that you show up at a holy site occasionally, do whatever the little ritual is there, ring the bell or tie the paper on the tree or something, and appreciate the sacred feeling of the place, and you're good. There's not a ton of philosophy or theology or divining of the will of God; the kami mostly just have rituals or taboos, and you do them and that's the extent of your relationship.

Atheists cover a pretty broad category. Atheism covers a very narrow, singular subject. Some traits may be more common among atheists than not, but really the only defining principle is a lack of belief or a belief in the non-existence of a god or gods.

With actual religions you at least have some idea of what they are supposed to believe or how they are supposed to act, even if they often diverge.

The Romans were more pagan, where that kind of religion is more shamanistic. There're a few words to describe it the metaphysics of it better, "animism" being one. It's only short-sighted if you view it literally, from a naturalistic perspective. All religions have a certain suspension of disbelief, and I think they're more interesting if you view it from a philosophical perspective where you view the merits and consequences of actually believing it rather than whether it's plausible or not.

So they're just going to stick with the most chill religion if they're actually committed in their nonbelief and not just people who never grew up with religion and haven't given it any thought.

Yeah, in degrees. Some people are indoctrinated and decide at the end of their adolescence that they hate it, some get something out of it, some convert without being indoctrinated. I think most muslims are pretty faithful, or at least a larger ratio than in other religion-cultures, and a lot of the more isolated ethnic religions even moreso.

it's pretty stupid that they included a rabbi in this. Judaism is a non proselytizing religion and there is absolutely no arguments for why someone should convert. Since the religion makes no claims that it is a better path to salvation than atheism, what could a rabbi possibly say to convince someone to convert, especially since doing that sort of thing is generally frowned upon.

No, it tends to be mostly Eurofags complaining about how most Americans believe in a god of some sort.

You guys are underestimating the power of guilt. Most likely some of these atheists have had religious parents and the religious folks are going to exploit the fuck out of that. "Your mother was a good Christian and she wants the best for you so why don't you come to church? Oh, She's dead? Well what a shame that she will be in God's glorious paradise in heaven while you rot in the fiery pits of hell you atheist swine."

    >Most likely some of these atheists have had religious parents

Pretty much all the atheist crybabies in this thread had religious parents who forced them to sunday church and whatnot so now they rebel by discussing just how much they hate religion with anonymous people online for the rest of their lives.
    Makes you wonder..

It makes me rage just thinking about it. Buddhists are about the only religious people I don't want to burn alive in oil.
