315 KB Where can I found real local news? Anonymous of College Park,MD 06/11/09(Thu)19:14 No.3846115
I don't watch local television news much and usually switch to it as background noise, because it's the same pattern over and over.

Major murder of the day, routine car accident, routine criminal incident, routine fire, uncredited health study, news stores that are no local to the area, latest celebrity event of the day, plus weather and traffic every 15 minutes.

There is absolutely little if any coverage of real local hard news: What your state and local governments are doing, civic events, local economic news, civic events, real investigative reports (I don't mean consumer investigations, real muckraking investigation). (The DTV switchover will do absolutely nothing about local news at all)

So what is the best source for REAL local news?

    Very Hard Mode: No Internet

Depends on how big your town is.

If it's a small-medium sized town, go talk to socialites. I find out the juiciest shit just by talking to people. Of course, that's more gossipy stuff than local up-to-the-minute news, but it's still worth it.

I don't necessary hate TV, I do watch a few primetime shows but generally prime time television has little appeal to me, even most cable channels primetime line ups has little appeal.

I usually watch the premium movie channels most of time.

    http://uk.reuters.com/

They're all probably biased in some form or another, especially the drudge report, but they gather together most noteworthy news stories of the day.

Make your own mind up about how series you take everything.

If you want "hard" (lol), local news, there still might be a few newspapers in your local area.

"Might" being the keyword here, newsfag.

Also, you should check the news on that picture, its a little outdated.

    "real" local news?
Local news will give you what most people want: accidents, murders, crime, weather, some national news.
If you want something like political stuff, try to find a local talk radio station, maybe something on A.M., they often cover those topics. I've found a fair bit out just by listening to talk radio, and all the people calling in to voice their opinions and talk about facts and events.
Find a good underground paper, local paper, and that should also help. For those reporters that can't strike it big, they head to smaller venues and still can do pretty good (and write good stories too).
Find the website of your local congress or delegates, they often have what was talked about during the day, voted on, the minutes, etc. It won't be condensed, like on the news or the paper, but if you want the hard dirt you'll have to work for it.
Find the local police website, and see if they offer tracking for local crimes. Maybe see if they list offenders in a certain area. Search for those names in Google and see what comes up, you may find something that hasn't hit the wire, or any news station yet.
Or like someone else said, get out and network, and talk to people. If you want good dirt, gossip, news, that's another great resource to use.
Sometimes you can also check out public access TV. There's sometimes newsworthy stuff there that isn't covered anywhere else.
