The only bad thing about this is that i won't be able to watch network tv through my antenna when my cable goes out. Last year my cable went out for a week and it was hell watching blurry network tv.

In the US, digital IS HD. You never got analogue HD or digital SD. NTSC to 720p is a huge jump, but not so much from PAL.

There are "free" HD channels like your local TV stations, but the convertor boxes can't handle them and your cable company won't give them to you for free unless you upgrade to HD/digital packages.

SD does still exist. Many programs in the US that are aired outside of prime time broadcast by 4x3.

For some reason the FCC classifies widescreen programing that is not letterboxed as Enhanced Definition.

You may get poor reception with analog but you'll have the opposite with digital signals. However the reverse may happen.
