Not really promoting religion. If anything I would say it's a stab at religion, or at least silly cult religions (i.e., all of them). But it's hopeful in its commentary, suggesting that there is some kind of higher force that watches over us and rewards the worthy. I don't really agree with it, but it's nice to think about it. It's nice to believe that if someone is honest and steadfast in their beliefs (i.e., the belief that someone on death row is innocent), then maybe God or whatever force there is can be convinced to interfere with the wrongs in our world and make them right.

I was also expecting a lot of black radicalism (see previews where Huey calls Reagen the Devil) but the show mostly directs its rage at lazy blacks while white people are mostly just responding to it by being opportunists.
