    >One of many questions at the end of the film is whether Mookie 'does the right thing' when he throws the garbage can through the window, thus inciting the riot that destroys Sal's pizzeria. The question is directly raised by the contradictory quotations that end the film, one advocating non-violence, the other advocating violent self-defense in response to oppression. Spike Lee himself, however, has stated that only white viewers ask this question. Lee believes the key point is that Mookie was angry at the death of Radio Raheem, and that viewers who question the riot's justification are implicitly valuing white property over the life of a black man.

Because having courts and laws is racist, amirite?

    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)07:28 No.3397254
You tools, the point is not whether the riot was the right thing to do. If it was, Lee would have ended the movie right there. Instead, he shows the aftermath and shows the people consoling one another and having to deal with their actions. Samuel L. Jackson even fucking tells you to sign up and vote to make a change.

But lol who cares spike lee black

Hah! Wrong. Spike says it was the right thing to do. He says only white folk question his character's actions because we "think a white man's property is more valuable than a black man's life".
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)07:39 No.3397304
    >>3397277

You do know that the riot itself was not accepted by all the characters in the movie? Like, not every single person in the neighborhood was up in arms, ready to fuck shit up? Right? And that the riot itself could be considered a heroic act because it diverted the crowd's attention away from Sal and his sons, stopping them from ripping them apart?

Lee's clearly not picking a side within the movie and if you believe that he believes the riot was the right thing to do, you're misreading his quote.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)07:40 No.3397310
    >>3397295
We're talking about the mind behind the movie. He agrees with the actions taken in the movie.

Also, like one person in the movie other than Sal and his sons didn't agree with the rioting.

At least three people within the movie didn't approve of the riot.

What's your point with that first comment? The director uses the characters and the story to get his point across.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)07:44 No.3397336
    >>3397320

Jesus, he's criticizing people for focusing on the riot itself, not the fact that a man was just killed or the rebuilding that happens afterward.

    >>3397331
Have you even seen the movie? Name the people who didn't approve.

The first comment is about Spike's own bigotry. His "point" is ludicrous. He's an idiot.

Listen, if you want to differentiate the art from the artist, I'm all for that. Granted that the movie leaves the question open, and Lee was good about at least trying to include viewpoints other than his own. Yes, the movie is ambiguous.

But Spike Lee is, or at least was, a dirty racist motherfucker who did see a clear cut answer to the question whether the right thing was done. Lee answers, resoundingly, "YES, and the only people who can't see that are white people, because they're all secretly racist".

Copy from Wikipedia much? Get lost, kid. In the movie Mother Sister is yelling "burn it down!" and Senor stands and watches and doesn't show support or contempt.

As far as I can tell, Lee said that throwing that trash can is the only way Mookie can fight back in response to what has just happened. He's also said that people are wrong to focus on whether or not the riot was justified, instead of focusing on the scenes surrounding the riot. All from the commentary.

Yeah, it's not like it's important that somebody was just killed. Or that Sal had the option to make peace with the crowd, like the Korean shop owners. But nope, you gotta do what you gotta do.

    Ok, so...

    >throwing that trash can is the only way Mookie can fight back in response to what has just happened
Bypassing the legal system in the process. Why is this the only thing he could have done? I'll agree that it's the only thing he could have done IMMEDIATELY, but was it a good idea to (re)act immediately?

    >people are wrong to focus on whether or not the riot was justified
Why? Isn't this just trying to understand the motivations of the characters, which is part and parcel of critical movie watching? More poignantly, understanding the motivation behind rational acts is what allows us to ascribe free-will to humans, as opposed to people whose actions are determined by mental illness or raw emotion (i.e. impulse).

It was supposed to make bblacks feel empowered after black racists start shit in a pizza place, the pizza place owner defends himself, and the blacks get made to be victims for staring shit needlessly.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)08:02 No.3397436
    >>3397416
    >>Why?

Because of Lee wanted you to focus on the riot, he would have ended the movie with the picture of MLK and Malcolm X being put up on the wall. Hell, anybody would have thrown a trashcan through a pizzeria window after that. But instead, he continues with the movie, showing people having to deal with their consequences by rebuilding and making condolences. Mookie and Sal even make peace at the end of the movie, after all that happened. Then the DJ outright tells you to vote and raise awareness.

Oh okay. I guess that's also why slavery doesn't matter at all anymore, to anyone, because whites and blacks eventually made up. So we don't even have to worry about whether it was justified, because it's all good now.
