    Do you know that many american broadcast networks broadcast in HD only during prime time. Most of the time during the daytime they're not taking advantage of the subchannels,

    It is a sham, unless you live in Britian. Even though you have to pay for a tv license at least you have at least 5 subchannels per terrestrial television station (even though thorough they don't call subchannels, subchannels).

    That's the problem, while they make so much money broadcasting cheaper crap, local affiliates don't reinvest some of the profit into producing local programs. They don't have to copycat primetime programs, but at least they can produce local programs (dramas, documentaries, etc) to replace the dime a dozen syndacrap (talk shows, court shows) programs on tv, especially on daytime.

    Why is that? The ITV regional stations during the pre-Thatcher years did produce their own local dramas. Some of them produced teleplays and such.

    Well they did also have something called Public Service Broadcasting. It's like the "public interest" in America but more enforceable and clearly defined.
