Keep this in mind:

The comic is WAY better. The story goes like this:

>Golden Age flashback (Guts' life story)
>Other stuff

The anime is just an adaption of Golden Age. It suffers from very low budget animation. They cut a lot of corners and there's not actual that much movement.

The New Anime films are animation disasters and are also adaptions of Golden age. The studio had no idea how to do 3D animation and it shows.

I just recommend reading the comic. Around Vol 21 it starts to go fullretard.

I like Eva because it develops a very strong relationship between the viewer and the pilots, mainly Shinji, but Asuka and Rei as well. Their stories about being abandoned really show through their characters... I loved all the battling and how dramatic it would get between Shinji and his father, and I did love the original final 2 episodes with all the "metaphysical" discussion.

I read the book Little Boy by Takashi Murakami, and it really stressed how Neon Genesis perfectly displayed Japanese life after World War II. I feel like it does capture a feeling perfectly, and its hard to describe.

Check out Akira. Eva does a good job portraying life in post-WWII Japan, but Akira does it better because its subject matter is more fit for it.

Also, check out Shin Mazinger Z. It's a remake of one of the first giant robot shows so it's a lot goofier than Eva, but the action is great and the characters are easy to get attached to. If you want something darker, try out Space Runaway Ideon. It's probably the show that most influence Eva.

It's all about the style and "spirit" you can give into it that counts. Stuff like sumi-e or ukiyo-e are not as complex as classical style western oil paintings, but they still are beautiful and manage to convey things through.
