Well OP, Fox screwed up by canceling Family Guy the first time and it came back to bite them in the ass. Seth had them over a barrel and ran with it.

I liked Wonderfalls a lot but it's another example of poor scheduling by Fox and not having the balls to let a show gain an audience. Look at what they did with Firefly for example. They didn't even air the episodes in order. Same with Arrested Development. They just don't find a good spot for a show and stick with it. I can't remember how many times Family and Arrested Dev were moved around in the schedule making it hard for fans to stay with it and to build a bigger fan base.

If anything you can be thankful that in todays media a show can be resurrected if it's good enough and the fan base is there. It may not happen all the time, but it happens.
