I just had an introductory lecture for a new module this semester.
In a few weeks we're watching this to look at US healthcare. I saw Bowling for Columbine when had to watch it in school, found it interesting but hate Moore. What should I expect from this? I've heard it's basically just subliminal "move to Canada" or something.

Also, are there any other films/ documentaries like this worth watching that look at health/ social care/ welfare, in the US or Europe? (including fiction I guess, so long as it's not John Q)

It's an entertaining watch, at least from the perspective of a European, but goddamn is it biased. Moore has a raging hard-on for Europe and Canada, doesn't mention the downsides of all the government funded stuff we get (high taxes and shit).

Moore takes the best examples from Socialized healthcare and the worst examples from private healthcare and then compares them.

The French pay 50% less taxes than Americans and they get free health care and free college. Americans pay all of that out of pocket in addition to the taxes.

In many ways, this movie is right about American health care. The private sector has fucked up America's system beyond all recognition.

Right, so in America the taxes would get even higher. I don't know why everyone is so obsessed with socialized health care. Why can't we reform what we have now? A lot of money is wasted and the producers of medical equipment are allowed to charge ridiculous prices. The system needs some regulation, not to just be abolished completely.

Expect him to see two hours of Moore pushing his agenda on you with the most obvious bias around. He'll twist around some aspects of socialized medicine to make it look good, add in all the great parts and will not mention any of the downsides. And the opposite goes for American medicine, he takes the worst and throws in some sob stories.

You would pay less money in taxes than you would for health insurance now. You would save money because there would be no giant corporate profit margins to pay for. Also you wouldn't have to pay co-pays or deductibles. You'd save thousands per year.

in return you get shitty healthcare handed out by a government whos only interest in mind is to move you though the paperwork as opposed to retaining your buisiness

I currently owe 10,000 bucks for getting in a car accident where i was knocked unconscious. The cops had me taken to the hospital where i woke up an hour later and immediately checked myself out against doctors orders. One hour in the hospital. Nothing wrong with me. 10,000 dollars that I'll be paying off for the next decade or so. Fuck the US system.

your choices are made for you either by a govt entity or your insurance company. its a false dichotomy to say you have more choice with private vs public health care. you have very little choice unless you are wealthy.

In case you're wondering where America is on that list, it's #38 below Costa Rica and just above Slovakia.

tangent apology: the last 10 years in America highlight the flaws in Libertarian philosophy as well as Friedman economics. I used to think i was a lib until seeing all of these principles in action. free countries do go to war against each other, competition doesnt really bring out the best in us and the free market is only a way to drain money from one group to another.
