Hackers (circa 1995) is one of my favourite movies. Sure, some couch potatoes / brain farts criticized its portrayal of hacking as "unrealistic". Therefore, they missed the entire point that this work of art so eloquently states - Hackers manage to perfectly encapsulate youth computer culture in our postcyberpunk time. Most people failed to realize that while hacking depiction is more akin to Neuromancer's stylistic outputs (indeed, they 'hack a Gibson'), this flick doesn't shy from explicitly stating machine configuration that they knew will be ridiculously outdated in couple, let alone 13+ years. Because it's a wonderful mix of good acting (and good looking, Jolie has never looked better), inspired supporting cast and, with appropriate soundtrack (Prodigy!) it manages to hit so many targets that you just need to relax and enjoy the sounds of throbbing awesomeness. Hackers.avi is constantly present on my Maxtor. <3

Just thought I'd share that with you. Now I'm going to shower. While I'm away, why don't you contribute with your own brain farts.

    - Yeah. It's not just the chip, it has a PCI bus. But you knew that.

90s classic, no question. Stupid plot, unrealistic, great ridiculous dialogue, great characters. Plenty of sentimental value. Have to take issue with

    >Hackers manage to perfectly encapsulate youth computer culture in our postcyberpunk time

Don't think culture was exactly post-cyberpunk in 1995. Perhaps in literature (keep in mind The Diamond Age was only just published that year) but not more generally.

Antiquated, silly, and laughable now, it's still a classic.

    Not irony, hommage.

In this pic, one important character is missing, ultra charismatic Renoly Santiago. Or, in the movie, Phantom Phreak. Anyways, their nicknames are hilarious. Crash and Burn. 1995 forever. Shit, at least I was in puberty back then. Most of poor bastards that post here were born at the end of the eighties, at best...this movie packs most punch when consumed by those born at the end of the seventies/early eighties combo.

Shame sequels didn't follow the original crowd. Still, it would be great if it would be done...Hackers 1.01

    >>2561878
Well, it at least anticipates postcyberpunk. It obviously gives hommage to classic cyberpunk, but builds on it through clearer perspective of future tech development. But yeah, it also uses some old school techniques (like phoning Venezuela for free in the beginning)...it's very functional mix - they even got the Japanese involved without crowding the plot.

I'd say Angelina is industrial-like raver, Renoly Santiago manages to pull off gayest clothes, tiger stripes etc without making you think he's homosexual, Jesse Bradford is the target, or rather the reflection of aforementioned puns (indeed, he also lacks proper "handle" or identity which Zero Cool quickly thinks when he switches to Crash Override), Laurence Mason aka Lord Nikon is classic weird old school dj/raver/jedi haxor, and Lillard is classic Gibson character.

Oh, and the antagonist is classic mischievous smartass...you forget the suit and the drab and see only his expressions...you know he works there, but has retained his creative spirit.

Lot of smoking in this movie. Shame Angelina doesn't light up.

It's really nostalgic - tech romanticism in urban sprawl, which culminates in that skyscraper spelling scene in the end. It's a moment in time - when, physically speaking, they are in their prime, so this movie is also about juices of youth. Like Prodigy was in 1995, like some of us remember diskettes, 40mb hard drives, first hardware fixes, glimpses of things without knowing the term cyberpunk yet feeling it, etc.

Despite doing nothing, I also always wanted to have Dade's little eye-enhancer that he wears during the hack-the-gibson scene, just because the thought of the internet being so interactive that'd you'd need GOGGLEs is such an awesome thought.

I don't think you can legitimately call something a soundtrack if some of the songs weren't actually in the film. Biggest con ever.

Browser? Shit the people this movie were made for were using shit like White Knight to dial into things. There was no real 'Internet' yet, it was just various bbs's and it was all text only. I remember when a few of us at school would get all excited because someone had gotten a new bbs phone number where some awesome shit was available, and I'd sit up all night because the guy who ran the thing only turned his system on for like an hour a night or something.

I'm trying to remember the name of that stupid text based empire building game some of these bbs's had. I thought that game was the fucking shit because you could play it against other people without even needing to go over to their house. It was turn based, you played your turns for a day and then you were done. Buying planets and building spaceships or something.

Nah I'm too young for that... I got into computers at a VERY young age (like 4) but I never got into any type of networking (bbs's and then the internet a little later) until i was like 11 or 12... by that time gif, jpg, mpg, and avi were the extensions of choice... I was born in 84 so that's a bit before my time... in the late 80s i was playing games written in gw-basic on my grandfather's pc that you had to write the code for first by following directions from the manuals... (hangman, gorilla war, etc...)

I had a subscription to Rainbow magazine (for my CoCo) and they had programs each month, with complete code printed, that you'd have to type yourself in order to use. I learned quite a lot doing this. Granted, most of it was in BASIC, but still.

Hackers changed my life. I saw it in the theater, and was blown away by the soundtrack and cyberpunk theme. I actually purchased it on laserdisc and bought a laserdisc player, just so I could get it early, without having to wait for a VHS release. I freeze-framed the credits and proceeded to buy almost every album listed in the credits from Prodigy - Music For A Jilted Generation, Leftfield - Leftism, Orbital - Oribital II, to Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman. It basically introduced me to good techno, though I was disappointed when I couldn't find other techno albums as good as those.

I'd agree that Hackers is postcyberpunk, mainly, but is very precisely set in the present time (hacking sequences can be interpreted as mind visualisations). However, because of the setting, and combination of older hacking techniques, as well as then present tech (RISC is good!) its not focused on defining itself as such, but instead is concentrated on moment in time, catching glimpses of future and past through present motions.

dystopian, rather than post-apoc. though i agree that post-apoc and cyberpunk are often intertwined (wasteland, fallout 1 & 2 for example)

you're right, dystopian would be a better adjective, but that's more or less what i meant.

ever play/read "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream"?

awesome cyberpunk short story/computer (adventure) game

It IS Wipeout, but it was a pre-rendered video made for the movie, so it looks better than what was available at the time of course.
