On Sunday we rolled out new HTML for 4chan's imageboards. The new code validates HTML5/CSS3, the design should appear exactly the same, pages should load slightly faster (especially long threads), and extension/user script/archive developers should have a much easier job parsing our pages. This is the first time in approximately ten years that it has been updated.

If you are using an extension or app that has not been updated for the changes, some features may not work—you will need to wait for the developer to update their extension/app to be compatible with the new HTML. If you haven't downloaded it already, try the Official 4chan Chrome Extension.

The most significant changes with the new HTML are a new mobile-optimized layout for phones, and inline extension features. Check them out by clicking [Settings] in the upper-right (make sure you don't select features that conflict with those from an extension though), or visit 4chan from your phone!

We are still working through a few bugs with the new code. Please report any bugs you find to newhtml@4chan.org.

Nah the stuff they have now is way superior. I aint even going to try to be biased at all. Born 1988 and shows like Adventure time and Random show(?) from what I've seen actually seem to care about the show and the writing is superb and the art style great.

The 80's and 90's were the best era because you had several studios trying to compete with eachother on Saturday mornings.

Regular Show, Adventure Time, and Phineas and Ferb are like, the only watchable cartoons these days. 90s had Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff girls, Batman, Samurai Jack, Animaniacs, Rocko's Modern Life and a shitload more.

>>
>>23147384

Not really man.

In the 90's we had a lot of cartoons like Dexter's Lab, Cow and Chicken, Ren and Stimpy, and even Aeon Flux. And that was just from cable television.

Network television had stuff like that MiB cartoon, as well as a slew of really nice Disney cartoons like Ducktales, Talespin, and Goof Troop. And then there were things done by other companies like Batman TAS and Freakazoid.

What kids have now, really ONLY comes from cable television or else they get fed regurgitated Japanese crap. That anyone would say the quality of cartoons has increased is just ridiculous.

The quality really has dropped off a great deal. Try looking for some kid's cartoons sometime. It's really weird seeing how the animation on most cartoons from Network television has dropped off dramatically, and that the quality of the jokes/stories are just such shit now.

When I was a kid (90's), you had adventure cartoons like Ducktales, that had longer running stories and better characters, because the people trying to sell those cartoons knew that it was the best way to ensure they'd be seen for years. I can't imagine most of the crap peddled now really being the sort of thing people would carry on about 10-20 years from now. (at least that goofy Spiderman cartoon and such)

Remember this shit?

I remember arguing with my friends during lunch that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was better.

All my friends loved the shit outa this show. I liked the Power Rangers.

God I loved lunch time, when everyone would pull out their game boys, and talk about cartoons and kids shows. I always felt bad for that one kid who didn't have a game boy nor cable tv. When we would talk about like Dexter or Power Puff girls, he had no idea wdf. Sometimes he would try and fake it and be like "oh ye that episode was awesome" but we all knew he didn't have cable.

TV animation's golden era of quality was between 1994-2005. Mainly, in the mid to late 90s, they continued hand drawn animation, but with digitally inked frames, reducing production costs but increasing quality. Shows like Hi Hi Puffy Amy Yumi increased the popularity of Flash being used in cartoons.

It's a disaster zone today. I watch TV with my 9 year old brother sometimes. Most of kid's animation is still well written with the whole "secret jokes for adults" schtick, but man, the animation is just horrible tweening everywhere.

Well duh; I'm not a kid, I don't know what's good now.

I'm just going on what my younger cousins watch, which (when I've watched it with them) seems to be pretty much the exact same quality as the sort of stuff I was watching in the mid 90's. Hell; I don't remember anything having plots as well-developed as the two Avatar shows.

Now, I personally think nothing can compare to Animaniacs or Pinky and the Brain, but I'm self aware enough to know that's the nostalgia talking. Our parents said it about the Flintstones and the Jetsons, and kids today will say the same shit about MLP and Adventure Time, no matter how much it annoys us.

Real adventures of Johnny Quest?
>>
>>23147944

Really? I thought Extreme Ghostbusters was surprisingly well done. The episode with those creatures that sawed people and and surgically reconfigured them a bit seemed like a fairly freaky cartoon for kids.
>>
>>23147944
As a kid, I always thought Men In Black: The Series sucked hard. I haven't watched it since as an adult, though.
This is coming from someone who loved movie spin-off cartoons, too. Including:

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
The Mask
Jumanji
Batman Beyond
etc..

>I'm self aware enough to know that's the nostalgia talking

It really isn't. Citing nostalgia has become this meme that is basically used as some refuting device when it does not such thing. I watched the standard 90s cartoons growing up; I also watched Top Cat, Flintstones, Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, etc. They were good shows and I wasn't nostalgic about them since I wasn't around when they first aired.

Scooby Doo, Jetsons and Flinstones are bad cartoons though.

They're pretty kitchse though and even the animation isn't impressive.

The old Looney Tunes stuff holds up in comparison and that's way older.
>>
>>23147885
I watched this not too long ago and thought it was alright, I definitely would have watched it as a kid. Though I also watched a few old X Men episodes and have to say it was superior. They didn't mind the characters looking like dicks, made it more interesting to watch. Even as a 5 year old.
>>
>>23147981
>I'm just going on what my younger cousins watch, which (when I've watched it with them) seems to be pretty much the exact same quality as the sort of stuff I was watching in the mid 90's.

Yeah, there's a few things like the Avatar cartoons that are nice now, but in the mid 90's there really were a ton more with similar quality storytelling and joketelling.

I did a search through TV listing the other day and was pretty surprised how basically every network television channel was just showing Japanese crap. Just try looking sometime, you'll find there's barely anything that is even really produced, so the fact that a few gems show up is actually kinda sad since that really is ALL THERE IS!

I kinda hate it since I know a ton of kids are growing up to love mediocre crap, and wonder a bit if this is why hipsters are so popular now.

I think.

Eh, I've seen a few episodes of the show here and there while babysitting my kid brother. It's not HORRENDOUS, it's one of those shows that feels like a throwback to the more mindless saturday morning dreck you'd watch as a kid. It's okay enough to not make you want to turn the TV off

Same with Almost Naked Animals and Barnyard. They give that Butch-Hartman-vibe of trying to be entertaining for adults as much as kids, but they're not very good at it. They're just kinda okay.

And don't fucking talk shit about the Cramp Twins, faggots

Old Looney Tunes are not kid's cartoons though. Those were cartoons aimed at audiences of all ages.

Comparing Looney Tunes to today's kid's cartoons is like comparing classic Simpsons to that old Gummy Bears cartoon.
>>
>>23148035
>It really isn't.

Yes it is. You're comparing whatever the popular shows of the moment are to the few standout shows of the past fifty years. OBVIOUSLY that's not a fair comparison. You're forgetting that 99.9% of the shows we watched back then were mediocre.

I would personally recommend:

Morel Orel
Superjail!
Wakfu
The Critic
Oban Star Racer

At least for personal favorites over the years.

>There really aren't as many quality cartoons being made these days as there were in the 90s. I don't know how you can't see it.

1) You're comparing an entire decade's worth of shows to just what's running right now.
2) You aren't in the right age bracket for kid's stuff now, so even if it's as good as what you watched as a kid you won't enjoy it as much.
3) You haven't actually seen a lot of what's running right now, so you have no idea if it's good or not.

Nostalgia. You are a victim of it.

There aren't as many period. No more saturday morning cartoons, Nickelodeon and Disney do almost exclusively live-action shows, i think theres a ban on violence in kids shows too now or some bullshit. Its sad that my girlfriends cousin watches iCarly at 6 years old because there is nothing else on for him most of the time.

1) you're fucking gay

2) Gummy Bears was fucking dope

3) the majority of the rest of that old '90s disney cartoon block was fucking dope (Rescue Rangers, Tailspin, Ducktales, etc.)

(even if it was breeding ground for furries)

4) Shitty-animated Simpsons does not hold up.

really, very few cartoon shows hold up when you look back on them 20 years later.

I watched some Captain Planet recently...... fucking fuck. The animators rarely even connected the outlines of the characters or images on the screen.
Also the best cartoon shows ever made:

swat katz
pirates of dark water
new adventures of speed racer
Thundercats
voltron
Biker mice from mars
exo squad
M.A.S.K.
old school GI Joe
The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest

Yes. when you are a 5-10 year old, television shows that coincide with cool ass toys are actually the best television shows you can possibly watch. If anyone wants to criticize the idea of "shows designed purely to sell toys" then they should rethink their argument: all children's shows are designed to sell.... something.... Even if its just viewer numbers and advertising dollars. Children's entertainment is a pure commercial/capitalistic business. There is nothing genuine, nothing "creative" and nothing "pure" about it..... its about money.

>Our parents said it about the Flintstones and the Jetsons, and kids today will say the same shit about MLP and Adventure Time, no matter how much it annoys us.

Flintstones and Jetsons came on CN all the time when I was a kid, and I enjoyed those shows too.

I think it's interesting that younger generations can watch reruns of old shows and still find those shows good while also enjoying their newer shows, while older generations will always have a hard time understanding or enjoying things that are made for kids after they grow up.

The reason most people look fondly at their old cartoons and don't like new cartoons is because cartoons are made for kids, and now that we're adults we just don't get the appeal like we used to. We can look at the old shows out of fondness.

I'm speaking generally of course. Not everyone has a hard time appreciating things that come after their own generation.
