It follows the basic horror trope until maybe a little halfway in. There's a part with a bike which is when everything just skyrockets and shit gets crazy.

There are some jump scares, but they're really well done and it doesn't feel cheesy. There is also good tension. It's an all around good scary movie.

But it's also funny, and cool, and a good movie by itself outside of the horror genre. You should see it.

It's a horror story within a completely different story. The horror parts are extremely cliche if you've ever seen any Friday The 13th movie, but are meant to be that way. The scary parts are tempered by extremely well thought out funny parts (unlike most shitty modern horror movies trying to shoehorn comedy in). Over all, this is by far my favorite movie of the year, which is not saying much really because everything thats come out so far has been a pile of shit. This'll end up in my top 10 for the year though easily.

The only way they could have improved this movie is by having Cthulhu show up at the end.

The cast was an exact copy of your average horror-movie cast, that was the whole deal with the blood sacrifice, it implied that horror movies are so cliche and similar because they're all orchestrated as a sacrifice to appease the gods.

The whole things reminds me a lot of Drag Me to Hell, in that it's self-aware that the premise is "been there, done that" and "silly/implausible," but still manages to remain fun and has plenty there for the gorehounds.

That's just the American team applying their cultural precedents to their ritual. There's no reason to suggest that every one should be the exact same.

But it's dumb to ask such petty questions when the movie as a whole was so clever and invigorating.

If Ancient Gods exist in this universe then theres no reason why all the horror tropes contained in the movie shouldn't be able to exist as well.

How are they contained? Did you not see the part where the pothead and the girl got into the huge underground base with all the soldiers and the monsters in their glass cages?

They explained in the movie that the Ancient Ones wanted elaborate sacrifices, not boring "girls tossed into volcanoes". Some people like vanilla ice cream, some people like chocolate ice cream with hot fudge, nuts and caramel.

Every country needs to do this because they don't want the Ancient Ones to get pissed and kill them? They also explained through out the movie how they were able to engineer this particular group of people into going out to the cabin.

In the beginning when the two lab geeks were talking they mentioned several times about a "failed" attempt that happened in 1998?

Does anyone know what that was in reference too?

BTW, The slut, jock, nerd, virgin and fool was a combination used because most horror movies use it and there was a reference point in the film (the slut showing her tits" that they record these because it is what the "audience" pays money for? I believe it was meant that they use the film to make a movie and push it out to the public. So thats how the labs are funded, the sacrifice is real and the general public thinks its just a movie.

Thats why the Japanese version showed young school girls and a generic girl ghost. Thats their version of a typical Japanese horror movie.

You could see on the board there were only about two dozen, but obviously hundreds of creatures in cubes.

I'd bet on most of those monsters not having an artifact, at least not one the directors bothered to come up with. Some of them had their artifact in the cage with them (like Hellraiser) while others didn't.

They better have a bucket of features in the bluray going into detail each monster they had in the movie and what it was a reference for.

    >They filmmakers probably didn't design a artifact for each creature but within the story universe there could very well have been one for each creature in the basement.

Exactly, which is why I want a Blu-Ray special feature for every monster and a little blurb about it's artifact. Just for the fun of it and to add even further scope to it all.

It's not meant to have tons of secret reference. It's openly parodying every famous movie horror trope and almost all the references are in plain site. The neat thing is that they practically included just about every single one you can think of.

Yeah, I'm obviously not 100% but it seems obvious that the protocol is to create a scenario (in this case the cabin), fill it with a selection of thematically appropriate artifacts (and maybe some wildcards), and then let them choose their deaths.

I'll bet the Japanese schoolchildren just had thirty creepy-black-haired-girl artifacts.

Based on the credits, I'm assuming Hellraiser dude was named Fornicus, Lord of Bondage and Pain.
