    83 KB /tv/ Film Club: TMNT (1990) Discussion Cinebro !!Htp1YaDNOfn 04/15/12(Sun)02:18 No.22305958 sticky
It's Sunday, and I know you're all excited that it's finally time to discuss Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Some potential topics to talk about:
    1. What you thought about the movie.
    2. Whether or not you think the nostalgia lives up, or the film has aged (if it's at all relative to you).
    3. Does this change your mind about Michael Bay's potential take on the franchise?
    4. Favorite moments.
    5. Least Favorite moments

Rule of the thread: Please stay on topic, and play nice no matter how retarded the other person is.

    Enjoy.

    It's Sunday already?
I might as well throw my two cents in...

    >I liked it a lot more than I thought I would
    >The film is dated only in the sense that it feels like it's from the 80's, But then again, so does Ghostbusters
    >What is Bay's take?
    >I honestly loved the scenes where they were at the old house in the countryside.
    >Least favorite moments were when the Turtles were "geeking out" and a lot of the fight sequences were really campy. (not that I fault a kids movie for that)

    I guess I'll weigh in.

I never really was a fan of TMNT, but the film surprised me. It was more enjoyable than I expected. Very campy, and it really has that 80s feel to it which might have been what I was looking at for most of the film.

Pretty humorous and fun for a kids film. I didn't think it was great, but it was a bearable hour and a half. I can see why people loved it way back then.

I still don't care about what Bay does to the franchise though.

It wasn't my choice to start with TMNT. The original thread started out well and we had a pretty good vote going, but TMNT ended up winning the vote, and despite being rigged, we agreed that with more curation, it could work next time.

Until then, we have to deal with TMNT, which wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. Provided the butthurt in the thread settles down, it *should* go over well.

The list I have so far for the next go is pretty diverse and without troll answers. It'll be hard to fuck up next week.

If you have any suggestions, I'm taking them as long as you can justify them. Poll goes up soon.

There's a difference. This film club was designed in my with expanding /tv/'s discussion capabilities (Well, yeah, fucking TMNT is a fantastic choice for that >.>). This way, everyone sees the same movie, and threads on new different movies aren't so small, and we can talk about things that aren't /tv/core.

It's also to prevent a lot of recommendation threads that come in. TMNT may not have been the best choice, but we shall see in the future.

    >1. What you thought about the movie.
This is my favorite movie of all time. Probably the best comic book adaptation of all time as well. It was overall so well put together with the story and the costumes. I doubt any other ninja turtle movies will top it.

    >2. Whether or not you think the nostalgia lives up, or the film has aged (if it's at all relative to you).
It has aged some, but it's still good to me. It's classic.

    >3. Does this change your mind about Michael Bay's potential take on the franchise?
Michael Bay is just gonna fuck it up. That alien shit is unnecessary. I just want to ask him why. Why do this?

    >4. Favorite moments.
When Splinter talks to Raph about his anger. Powerful stuff, man.

    5. Least Favorite moments
When Tatsu started beating up the other foot soldiers. Like really? He was that mad.

it lives up.. april's hair doesn't. but then again, it never really did to begin with.
    >3. Does this change your mind about Michael Bay's potential take on the franchise?
not in the slightest. he will fuck it in the ass with orifice faced mousers.
    >4. Favorite moments.
let's see, the 'deep' personal moments at the isolated house, the fight raph has with the foot on the roofs; the fight the follows it in the antique shop. the fight on the roof where the turtles are basically beaten by the shredder.
    >5. Least Favorite moments

    1)It was alright.
2)The film has not aged well for me. It was cheesier than Mikey's pizza.
3)No because it's Michael Bay. I know he's just the producer but anything he touches turns to shit.
4)Seeing the captain from Thin Red Line as Casey Jones.
    April O'Neil with no bra.
The slow reveal of the turtles. Fucking awesome.
Seeing Sam Rockwell.(It's amazing that this is his first film)
The fight scene at April's house.
5)Some of the other fight scenes were really stupid.
    The dialogue was really cheesy.

Do you think its possible to take a conventional childrens franchise like TMNT or Pokemon and turn into into a "grimdark" R-rated gorefest?

Imagine a DARKLY COMEDIC TMNT. The turtles are deformed freakish monsters. They're murderers. A female police detective is on the case, but she ends up getting raped and killed by them. The FBI is called in. Things escalate. The turtles start killing more and more. They eventually turn on each other and the finale ends with an epic bloodbath with only one victor out of the four.

Turning nostalgia on its head, making a mockery of those fond sweet childhood memories. Taking an IP and going in a really WEIRD direction - I think we'll actually see some of this in our lifetime. Something like it within the next 15 years, I'd wager.

Going to bed now. If anyone wants, they can also make recommendations here, but give me some good reasons for the film.

It's a better list too so far. It's near impossible to fuck up.

    That's not what it's about.
And it wouldn't lend itself well to the format of the club.

    >start club with TMNT and have it stickied
yeah not the best of ideas.

Personally I don't like a /tv/ club telling me when and what to watch, especially a movie like TMNT and I find the whole idea a bit redundant. if you already have an IRC channel where you organize your club and members just /topic the thread there so you can track it and bump it if necessary.

As for the movie, I watched it when I was 12, enjoyed the fuck out of it and wore out my soundtrack tape but I don't remember much about it and it's not exactly a film I want to rewatch.

    1. Still the best movie.
    2. Still lives up.
    3. It will be good, but not as good.
    4. When all four are standing outside the house and they say "we have to go back." pic related.
    5. When Shredder asks Splinter "what are these freaks?" referring to the turtles as if a giant talking rat is normal.

I liked it. The costumes were quite good, and it was a fun and enjoyable film. Some of the fight choreography was noticeably different when it involved the Turtles, but I think they handled it quite well for what they had.
A favourite moment was the Shredder reveal, with the suspense and sweeping shot to avoid revealing his face until the last minute.

It has aged, but I think that it's still pretty good quality, better than the recent film at least.
I don't have high hopes for Bay's movie. In addition to the rumours, which don't inspire faith, we've seen his vision for children's shows turned movie and if he keeps up similar themes in the Ninja Turtles film it could be really bad.

my apologies, I meant to watch this and contribute to the discussions but I was totally swamped with papers and projects, I'll make sure to watch whatever movie we pick for next week though.

Good work cinebro and thanks mod for actually stickying this.

No one is telling you what to watch. Even if you want to participate in the club, you can just skip this week.

No, it really isn't. You can simply keep scrolling.

Really? That's what you consider "enforcement". I don't see anyone forcing you to post in this thread.
This is for people who were already looking for it.

    >> Anonymous 04/15/12(Sun)04:42 No.22307497
    >>22307466

By "enforce discussion", I meant - they've stickied the thread to encourage people to post when I honestly don't believe they'd do so otherwise.

Can we at least not sticky these threads in future?

And I honestly believe that was not the intent behind the sticky.
I'm not sure what the big deal is, but if there is so much objection, I don't see why the thread can't be tracked from the IRC channel.
