Fine, I'll say it. It's anti-intellectual and portrays intelligent people as socially retarded, scatter brained clowns. When you consider programs like IT Crowd or Fraiser which had characters that could be considered "very intelligent" or "nerds" they were not the but of every joke.

In those shows EVERYONE from Jen Barber to Martin Crane could be the butt of a joke as where in Big Bang Theory it will be one of the four male supporting cast. Penny while has some short falls (usually those displaying she doesn't get computers and science like the guys), will be portrayed as a responsible adult who works while the work the four male "nerds" do is belittled.

The only time a "nerd" in the Big Bang Theory has a chance of escaping some sort of one negative stereotype is when they're female.

In conclusion The Big Bang Theory is a horrible show that paints a negative picture of the "intelligent" characters as a means to comfort the viewer who is likely not as smart and the referential humor (one of the lowest kinds of humor) is rarely correct.

Well, I mostly disagree with it because Frasier and Niles were not nerds. They weren't the butt of the joke because they were classy gentlemen who enjoy the finer things life has to offer. That's not to say they were never the butt of the jokes. They certainly were on many occasions, but only in a light and very humours way that plays on their particular personalities rather than intelligent people as a whole.

Also, in TBBT, not everyone is the butt of the joke. Leonard is an intelligent nerd but he's still a very normal, likeable guy. Sheldon is very eccentric and intelligent, and is only the butt of many jokes because he is an annoying and obnoxious person to anyone who doesn't quite understand him. Howard is looked down on by everyone because he's a creepy, perverted little nerd who treats women very poorrly. The writers have screwed up Raj's character so much that I'm not even going to issue it (seriously, stop pushing all the homosexual shit).

The two sitcoms aren't very similar. So I don't even know why you're comparing them. I think you're trying to force the stereotype that all intelligent people are also nerds. Am I wrong?

Oh, and I wanted to say, the latest seasons of TBBT have been pretty awful compared to the first three seasons. I don't know which ten episodes you might have seen, but if they were ten episodes from the fourth and fifth seasons, then you're not really entitled to much of an opinion. Give it a try from the very beginning. See how you feel then.

The difference is I'm discussing the topic posted and made semiotic analyses of the episodes I viewed. If you feel my points have as little worth as the crude analogy you offered, I can refer you to the specific episodes and what part in the plot would communicate anti-intellectual messages to the viewer. I don't think that's necessary though.

If you're the same Anon as before, which I believe you are your analogy is a insult lacking in subtlety, revealing once again you care almost obsessively about a stranger on the internet simply because they don't share your opinion. I'm sorry you feel that way.

You just went off on a tangent here. You said that not everyone is the butt of the joke (which wasn't even his argument, he said the male characters, not all characters) then described each character's personality. Neither have anything to do with each other. You haven't actually pointed out how Leonard isn't the butt of every joke, just what he's supposed to be in the show. Seriously, that entire paragraph is fucking sloppy.

once in a while they meet some.
Some old friends from school are the try to educate themselves, and start reading books. And meet other people who "read". But at the and of the episode they notice that reading/beeing educated is for faggots.
    >that's the joke

And what i got from these thread about Fraiser, being smart but not a nerd.
That's exactly what i am talking about:
Shows like TBBT or KoQueens portray smart = nerds
In this shows there is no possibility to be educated and a cool guy.

When I say 'everyone' I was referring to the main leads. He was talking about the male supporting cast, and I'm not sure how he sees them as being regarded in a negative light to comfort viewers who aren't as smart as them. That is just an idiotic description of the show.

This coming from a guy who has only seen ten episodes, which may have actually been ten of the worst episodes of the series. Then based off those ten episodes, says the entire show is horrible.

You are incorrect with the idea that I'm trying to push a stereotype. I used Fraiser as one of the examples because the relevance of Fraiser's and Niles' intelligence juxtapose everyone else (as seen in the relationship they have with Martin). This is comparable to how Penny may not understand computers just as Martin may be oblivious to something his sons are passionate about.

As a result of Fraiser and Niles being the more intelligent and two of the most used characters in the show, I felt it was useful since one making an erroneous semiotic analysis might think Fraiser was anti-intellectual. It wasn't. It's humor made constant use of misunderstandings in most case.

In the case of the Big Bang Theory, as I stated it's referential humor and the comparison of the four nerds to everyone else paints a very negative image. Even Leonard isn't painted in a very kind light from the episodes I saw. I switched between TBS to a local channel so my selection was from varied seasons. Raj was more or less there to remind the viewer he was from India every chance he spoke. So there's another iota of cultural ignorance TBBT promotes.

I notice you didn't try to counter my using IT Crowd as an example.

I felt 10 episodes from at least 2 different seasons was a fair selection for viewing. It's silly to tell someone their opinion means nothing because they didn't consume ALL of the product.

I should add though; I do not hate The Big Bang Theory. I'm indifferent to it and at worst, dislike it. I dislike it for the negative ideas it encourages in the audience, the fact the detrimental messages are so eagerly consumed they're lucrative and the fact it's standard, sitcom shit.

Well I might have spoken a bit rash previously when I said I disagreed with everything you said. I'm at least in agreement with your opinion on Frasier.

I don't agree with your opinion on the characters in TBBT, though. How are they being regarded in a negative light, exactly? Also, Leonard is probably the nicest guy I've seen in a television series in a long time. I have tremendous respect for his character and I respect his intelligence.

There was that one episode where Penny is dating some really stupid guy and the four main guys insult and bully on his lack of intelligence, but they feel guilty and apologize for it afterwards. Also that was an episode from season 5, so forget about that shit because it doesn't count.

The writers are seriously messing up. I tend to pretend that there is no season 4 and 5. Especially a season 5. They're pretty awful seasons. I'm not blind to that. I'm thinking the episodes you DID watch may have been from those two seasons. It seems very likely that they were.

In the end, the four of them, along giving each other a hard time most of the time (it's what friends do), care about each other. Penny loves them and they love Penny. They're like family. try watching it from the beginning, you'll probably have a better attitude towards it.

I have not watched IT Crowed.

Since this is a Frasier thread now:
I have never seen the show, but heard good stuff about it: Should I just watch it or would it be better if I first watched Cheers? Does the show hold up or is it not worth watching anymore?

    like i already said
I saw all episodes and I endorse your opinion.

to me it seams like BrBa is the only show that shows education and being educated is an advantage

Having not watched this show in over a year I decided to catch up. Why have the last two seasons begun to focus more on these girls than the original cast?

The majority of episodes seem to be about one or more of the female characters getting upset and the males having to perform some task/ learn some lesson on how to manipulate/be manipulated to make them happy again. Insert a few references to "Nerd culture" and the episodes complete.

Also in watching almost 50 episodes in quick succession highlighted to me that there's not a single likeable character. Everyone is selfish, lying, untrustworthy and mocking of every other character.

I'd say that Cheers and Frasier are two entirely different things. Cheers would hold up for people who watched it at the time and would still be funny today, but Frasier is on a different level.

With very few exceptions most episodes have great plots that intermingle perfectly, often resulting in superb payoffs.

    >There was that one episode where... it doesn't count.
It counts if part of the show and it use the same underlying theme and subconscious themes for viewer gratification.

Because like with standard sitcoms, they aren't characters so much as they're stereotypes or archetypes. In one episode Penny berates Leonard because the time machine they've bought makes her late for work. The meaning communicated is that as you so helpfully pointed out Leonard who is the "good" nerd the viewers should like is the one who wants to get rid of all his hobbies to better conform to what Penny might like (despite her having someone). This tells the viewer "Be like Leonard and don't be yourself!"

In another episode this idea that Leonard having an actual character is immediately cast aside when a new girl moves in and she uses all the guys (even Leonard) for favors. Whats horrible about that episode is that its resolved when Penny physically fights the new girl and so she can take care of the four intelligent characters to needing to be babied and taken care of by the responsible, normal Penny. Intelligence isn't what determines someone will be used, it's confidence.

Do you see how it goes? This is how semiotic analysis works. Look at your conclusion of it, you view them as a family and its warmly generalized as pleasant but they aren't a real family. They are fictional characters WRITTEN to do things.

Without having seen all the seasons I'm willing to bet that Penny, who is supposed to be the character the viewer relates to, is the one who brings them all together and validates them and resolves the conflicts if she's relevant to the plot.
